    Abstract: A secondary battery may include: an electrode assembly in which a first electrode, a second electrode, and a separator are wound; a battery can; a cap assembly; a spacer; and a spring part. The first electrode may include a first electrode current collector and a first electrode extension part in which the first electrode current collector is exposed in a lower direction. The second electrode may include a second electrode current collector and a second electrode extension part in which the second electrode current collector is exposed in an upper direction. The first electrode extension part may contact the spacer. The second electrode extension part may contact the cap assembly. The spring part may include a shape memory alloy, so that a distance between a highest point and a lowest point of the spring part decreases at a deformation temperature higher than a normal operating temperature range.

    Abstract: A battery cell may include an electrolyte, a first electrode including a first electrode layer and a first current collector, a second electrode including a second electrode layer and a second current collector, a separator interposed between the first electrode and the second electrode, and at least one protective layer. For example, a protective layer may be interposed between the first electrode layer and the first current collector, the second electrode layer and the second current collector, the separator and the first electrode, and/or the separator and the second electrode. When activated, the one or more protective layers may reduce or interrupt current flow through the battery cell. The composition of the one or more protective layers may include one or more small molecule additives to increase its stability and conductivity, thus improving the performance as well as the safety profile of the battery cell.

    Abstract: A silicone laminate 1 includes layers of a silicone rubber layer (A) 2 and a silicone layer (B) 3 with a lower hardness than the silicone rubber layer (A) 2. The silicone layer (B) 3 is at least one layer selected from the group consisting of a silicone sponge layer (B1) and a silicone gel layer (B2). Both the silicone rubber layer (A) 2 and the silicone layer (B) 3 are made of a material that is converted to ceramic and forms a sintered body when burned, so that the material retains its shape. The silicone laminate 1 is fire resistant. It is preferable that the silicone rubber layer (A) 2 and the silicone layer (B) 3 are alternately stacked, and that the number of layers is two or more for each of the layers (A) and (B), and four or more in total. Thus, the silicone laminate has high fire resistance and high compressive resistance as a cushioning material for batteries.

    Abstract: A battery, method and battery operated portable communication device are provided with protection from excessive current and thermal conditions. A plurality of protection circuits are coupled in series within a common charge/discharge path of the battery. The first protection circuit is configured to block current by opening a switch in response to a voltage drop across the switch and a current sense resistor in the common charge/discharge path. The second protection circuit provides redundancy under conditions where the first switch might fail, where the second switch will block current through the current sense resistor.
