Abstract: Methods and systems for reducing emissions of an internal combustion engine are described. In one example, a combustor is applied post shutdown to purge stored NOx from a passive NOx absorber to prepare for a subsequent engine start. The trapped NOx is subsequently reduced via a selective catalytic reduction catalyst.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for re-combustion of exhaust in a cylinder of a multi-cylinder engine in order to increase the temperature of the exhaust for enhancing catalytic conversion within the multi-cylinder engine. In one example, a method may include expelling combusted gases from the cylinder into an intake manifold via an intake valve during an exhaust stroke, in order to rebreathe in the combusted gases from the intake manifold via the intake valve in a subsequent intake stroke.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for directing the flow of recirculated exhaust gas (EGR) delivered to an EGR cooler. In one example, a method includes flowing EGR through an EGR cooler positioned in an EGR passage, the EGR cooler comprising a bypass passage, a first cooler core flow path, and a second cooler core flow path, and adjusting a valve of the EGR cooler to selectively block flow of the EGR through the bypass passage, the first cooler core flow path, and the second cooler core flow path. In this way, fouling of the EGR cooler may be reduced.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for determining changes in a flow area of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve for EGR flow estimates due to a change in temperature difference between a stem and body of the EGR valve. In one example, a method includes adjusting an EGR valve based on an estimate of EGR flow, the EGR flow estimated based on a pressure difference across the EGR valve and an adjusted valve flow area. The adjusted valve flow area may be based on the temperature difference between the stem and body of the EGR valve.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for flowing exhaust through a second cooler, arranged downstream of a first cooler and upstream of an intake in an exhaust gas recirculation passage, and extracting condensate for water injection from condensate in cooled exhaust gas exiting the second cooler. In one example, a method may include adjusting the amount of exhaust gas flowing through the second cooler based on an amount of water stored at a water storage tank of a water injection system and engine operating conditions. Further, the method may include selectively flowing exhaust gas from the second cooler to a location upstream or downstream of a compressor in response to engine operating conditions.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for a fuel injector coupled to mixing passages for entraining combustion chamber gases with a fuel injection to decrease formation of soot throughout a range of engine operating parameters. In one example, a method includes decreasing a combustion chamber temperature in response to an amount of sensed light.

Abstract: Methods and systems for adjusting a branch communication and wastegate valve in a dual scroll turbocharger system are provided. In one example, a method may include adjusting the branch communication and wastegate valve in a passage connecting a first scroll, a second scroll, and a wastegate passage may control an amount of exhaust flow to a turbine during certain engine operating conditions.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for exhaust flow in an engine system including a split-exhaust manifold for expediting exhaust catalyst light-off and engine warm-up while reducing condensation in the engine system. In one example, a method may include, before exhaust catalyst light-off, flowing all or more exhaust gases, via a first exhaust valve and a first exhaust manifold, to an exhaust catalyst by passing a heat exchanger. Further, after light-off but before engine coolant warms up to a threshold temperature, all or more exhaust may be delivered to the heat exchanger, via a second exhaust valve and a second different manifold, prior to flowing to the exhaust catalyst; and exhaust gas recirculation may not be provided until the coolant reaches the threshold temperature to reduce condensation.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for exhaust gas heat recovery at an exhaust gas heat exchanger. Exhaust gas may flow in both directions through an exhaust bypass passage and the heat exchanger coupled to the bypass passage. Hot or cold EGR may be delivered from the exhaust passage to the engine intake manifold and heat from the exhaust gas may be recovered at the heat exchanger.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for reducing EGR estimation errors during lean engine operating conditions. During lean engine operation, EGR is disabled if the estimated exhaust air-fuel ratio becomes leaner than a lean threshold. The lean threshold is adjusted based on an upper limit of EGR errors that may be tolerated by the engine at a given engine speed and load.
