    Abstract: Systems and methods for end-of-life disabling of a diagnostic test system are described. In one aspect, a diagnostic test system that includes a test unit and a disabling unit. The test unit performs at least one diagnostic test on a diagnostic assay to determine whether at least one analyte is present within a sample. The disabling unit determines a measure of current lifetime of the test unit and disables the test unit in response to a determination that the current lifetime measure meets an end-of-life threshold. In a diagnostic test method, at least one diagnostic test is performed on a diagnostic assay to determine whether at least one analyte is present within a sample. A measure of current lifetime of the test unit is determined. The test unit is disabled in response to a determination that the current lifetime measure meets an end-of-life threshold.

    Abstract: A machine readable assaying system comprising a test card having machine readable assaying means. A plurality of individual analysis strips, each strip comprising antibodies and/or reagents capable of indicating the positive presence of distinct illicit substances form a pattern of elements including one or more fixed strips and one or more blank regions. The detection of the presence of a particular substance or drug will result in one or more of the analysis strips changing from a first (light reflective) color to a second darker (light absorbent) color. The pattern of analysis strips, fixed strips and blank regions may be provided to encode one or more characters/digits of information. By the inclusion of the analysis strips with the plurality of fixed strips and blank regions, the detection of one or more illicit substances may alter the overall pattern of fixed and test strips and blank regions, and hence cause the encoded information represented thereby to be altered. Accordingly, the particular pattern of bars and spaces that result from an exposure the physiological fluids of a donor is contemplated to produce a distinct machine readable indicia. The transformation which occurs on the test card will be uninterpretable by the administrator of the test, thus preserving the anonymity and privacy of the tested individual.

    Abstract: A machine readable assaying system including a test card providing a machine readable assaying arrangement. At least one analysis strip is provided, possibly including antibodies and or reagents capable of detecting and optically indicating the presence or absence of at least one substance present within a volume of physiological fluid. The analysis strips composing, at least in part, an assaying mechanism in the form a pattern of elements, generally additionally including at least one fixed strip, and at least one blank region. Each analysis strip, upon contacting the physiological fluid of a donor for a suitable temporal interval, may effect a change from a first state having a first reflectance level to a second state having a second substantially different reflectance level, thereby altering the pattern formed by the assaying mechanism. The particular pattern that results from an exposure to the volume of the physiological fluid is contemplated to produce a distinct machine readable indicia. The assaying system may also include a scanner and decoder to optically scan and read the machine readable indicia and transmit read information over a communication link to a remote location for processing. In a most preferred embodiment of the system, the transformation of the pattern, which occurs on the test card, will not be readable or interpretable by the administrator of the test/assay, thus preserving the anonymity and privacy of the tested individual.
