Abstract:
A method includes providing an exhaust stream for an internal combustion engine, where the exhaust stream is fluidly coupled to an aftertreatment component. The method includes optically determining an amount of an exhaust gas constituent in the exhaust stream. The method further includes modifying a model stored on a computer readable medium in response to the amount of the exhaust gas constituent. The model is an engine NOx generation model, a catalyst NOx storage model, a catalyst NOx conversion model, a catalyst NO to NO2 conversion model, a catalyst conversion efficiency model, an engine soot generation model, and/or a urea hydrolysis model.
Abstract:
A position sensor is disclosed having a transducer formed by a Hall-effect device and permanent magnet secured within a housing on either side of a low permeability gap. A target secured to an active member, such as an EGR valve plunger moves within the gap. The target has a flux modulating property that varies with position along a direction of travel. In one embodiment, the reluctance of the target varies with position. Variable reluctance is achieved in some embodiments by varying the cross section of the target with position. In some embodiments, a second target having substantially constant reluctance secures to the active member and moves within a gap defined by a second transducer. The output of the second transducer is used to normalize the output of the first transducer and compensate for anomalies such as drift and movement other than in the direction of travel of the active member.
Abstract:
A process, system, and component configuration are described that discourages customer acceptance/use of will-fit, reconditioned, and counterfeit product components, by determining whether or not a serviceable product component is genuine. If a component is determined to not be genuine, then appropriate action may be taken to warn operators and document such findings. For example, one or more markers are disposed or otherwise put on the subject serviceable product component and serves as a targeted feature, and/or a particular characteristic of the filter itself is identified as the targeted feature. A sensor is used to detect the targeted feature and obtain information unique to the serviceable product component. The targeted feature(s) identifies the particular serviceable component as genuine and forms the basis for determining whether a genuine component has been installed. In some circumstances, a fluid filter product is the component that is the subject detection.
Abstract:
A method and system for improving sensor accuracy of diesel emissions is disclosed. The method and system change the sensor reading as a function of sensor age to provide a more accurate measure of the diesel emissions. By estimating the degree of sensor error and then providing a gain correction factor as a function of sensor age, a more accurate measure of the diesel emissions is provided.
Abstract:
A non-oriented direct coupled sensor for gear teeth or similarly shaped discontinuities of a ferrous magnetic or magnetic target uses a single magnet and a direct coupled Hall cell integrated circuit to detect the presence or absence of gear teeth. The sensor incorporates techniques for flux steering and flux reversals independent of the orientation of the sensor to the target to overcome the operate or release point of a Hall switch, latch or other device. The use of spaced apart, offset flux concentrators provides a sensitive device with favorable tolerances in temperature and air gap.

Abstract:
A run-safe filter system is provided for confirming installation of a qualified filter element in a housing. An electrical switch has a first electrical condition in response to a qualified filter element being installed in the housing, and a second electrical condition in response to the absence of a qualified filter element installed in the housing.

Abstract:
An engine crankcase gas blow-by sensor. In a closed crankcase ventilation system, crankcase gases are caused to flow through a venturi which includes high pressure and low pressure taps. The high and low pressure taps are coupled to a differential pressure transducer which produces an output that is proportional to the volumetric flow of crankcase gases through the venturi. The use of a venturi in conjunction with a differential pressure sensor offers a low resistance path for the flow of crankcase gases and allows continuous monitoring of blow-by without exceeding the operating pressure limitations of various oil seals. Such a sensor is particularly suited for closed crankcase ventilation (ccv) systems, as it doesn't require venting of crankcase gases to the atmosphere, but works well in open crankcase ventilation systems also.
Abstract:
A continuous liquid level measurement system is disclosed which is based upon a differential pressure measurement. The pressure of the liquid level to be measured is calibrated with a second pressure measurement of the pressure above the liquid in order to get a more accurate pressure measurement which is related in a predetermined manner to the level of the liquid. For instances in which the liquid to be measured is in a harsh environment, the invention provides for a means for mounting the sensitive pressure measurement devices remotely from the liquid.
