Abstract:
Described are methods and compositions for increasing islet-1 (Isl1) activity (e.g., biological activity) and or expression (e.g., transcription and/or translation) in a biological cell and or in a subject.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides compositions and methods for treating subjects at risk for or with sensorineural hearing loss. Such compositions and methods include modulating the epigenetic status of the cell, or rate of protein degradation, to increase expression and/or levels of Atoh1 protein.
Abstract:
This invention relates to methods for promoting reinnervation of auditory hair cells, specifically, by inhibiting Repulsive Guidance Molecule a (RGMa), a repulsive axonal guidance molecule that is expressed in the cochlea, or its receptor, neogenin.
Abstract:
The disclosure includes devices and methods for controlling fluid flow. The devices include a tube configured to receive fluid from a fluid source; and a valve for controlling fluid flow through the tube, the valve responsive to fluid pressure in the tube. The valve includes a first magnet outside the tube at a fixed first distance from the tube and a second magnet outside the tube substantially opposite the first magnet and at a second distance from the tube, the second distance greater than the first distance. The valve includes a ferromagnetic fluid within the tube between the first magnet and the second magnet and held in position by a magnetic field generated by the first magnet. The amount of ferromagnetic fluid is sufficient to seal the tube when the fluid pressure is below a threshold pressure set by the second distance between the second magnet and the tube.
Abstract:
Provided herein are methods for inducing cell death in a gram positive bacterium and methods for reducing the proliferation of a gram positive bacterium that include contacting a gram positive bacterium with a dye (e.g., an azo dye) and a TarO inhibitor. Also provided are methods of treating a subject having a gram positive bacterial infection that include administering to a subject having a gram positive bacterial infection a dye (e.g., an azo dye) and a TarO inhibitor. Also provided are compositions containing a dye (e.g., an azo dye) and a TarO inhibitor, and kits containing at least one of these compositions.
Abstract:
This invention generally provides compounds, pharmaceutical compositions, and methods for their use, which include methods that result in increased expression in an Atoh1 gene (e.g., Hath1) in a biological cell. More specifically, the invention relates to the treatment of diseases and/or disorders that would benefit from increased Atoh1 expression, e.g., a hearing impairment or imbalance disorder associated with a loss of auditory hair cells, or a disorder associated with abnormal cellular proliferation.
Abstract:
Methods are described for predicting ancestral sequences for viruses or portions thereof. Also described are predicted ancestral sequences for adeno-associated virus (AAV) capsid polypeptides. The disclosure also provides methods of gene transfer and methods of vaccinating subjects by administering a target antigen operably linked to the AAV capsid polypeptides.

Abstract:
In one aspect, the disclosure features methods for estimating a vestibular function of a subject. The methods include moving the subject along a first direction parallel to the direction of gravity, receiving a first input set from the subject, the first input set indicating the subject's perception of the first direction, and estimating a first parameter related to a first vestibular function of the subject based on the first input. The methods further includes changing an orientation of the subject with respect to the earth, moving the subject along a second direction after changing the orientation of the subject, and receiving a second input set from the subject, the second input set indicating the subject's perception of the second direction.
Abstract:
Provided are methods of delivering at least one pharmaceutical agent to the central nervous system (CNS) of a subject, methods of treating a neurological disorder or pain in a subject that include administering at least one pharmaceutical agent onto a SEM graft in the skull base of the subject. Also provided are methods of treating a neurological disorder or pain in a subject that include forming a SEM graft in the skull base of the subject and administering at least one pharmaceutical agent onto the SEM graft in the skull base of the subject. Also provided are methods of forming a SEM graft in the skull base of a subject, compositions for administration onto a SEM graft in the skull base or into an endonasal reservoir or endonasal reservoir device in a subject, and devices for administering such compositions onto a SEM graft in the skull base of a subject.
