A rotary tool such as a helix drill and an end mill for example, is manufactured by forming a blank by an extrusion process, and then sintering the blank. During the extrusion, a mixture is passed through a die which provides a cylindrical shape to the outer peripheral surface of the mixture. A plurality of jaws are disposed downstream of the die for conducting the mixture. Each jaw includes a helical ridge for engaging the outer surface of the extrudate to cause a helical groove to be formed therein which constitutes a chip flute in the tool. During the extrusion, the jaws are moved away from the mixture to terminate formation of the chip groove, whereby a shank portion of the tool is formed.

The mixture is also advanced past a plurality of shaping parts which project transversely into the extrusion passage for shaping exterior chip flutes in the mixture, e.g., by embossing or cutting. The mixture is allowed to harden into a green body, and the green body is then sintered to form a blank.

Preparation, handling, and spray drying, in an economic and environmentally-friendly way, of slurries for the production of tungsten carbide based hard metal tools or components by the powder injection molding or extrusion route is disclosed. The slurry used is based on ethanol-water and contains metal carbide and metallic raw materials as well as stearic acid and a low concentration of polyethylenimine (PEI). The concentration of PEI is 0.01–1 wt % of the raw material weight. This combination results in low-viscous slurries, which require less use of ethanol, energy, manpower, and equipment time in their preparation, handling, and spray drying. The invention also relates to the powder obtained by using the method.
