The present invention relates to a method for the production of tungsten carbide based cemented carbide or cermet tools or components using the powder injection moulding or extrusion method comprising mixing of granulated cemented carbide or cermet powder with an organic binder system whereby the mixing is made by adding all the constituents into a mixer heated to a temperature above the melting temperature of the organic binders. According to the invention the organic binders are added into the mixer, waiting for a melt to form and then slowly adding the cemented carbide or cermet powder into the melt, making sure the temperature does not fall below the melting temperatures of the organic binders.

The tool is made of solid cemented carbide and includes a shank for mounting in a rotatable spindle and chip flutes. Lines of intersection between the chip flutes and clearance surfaces form cutting edges at a cutting end of the tool. The flush channels extend through the entire tool in order to transfer flushing medium to the cutting end of the tool. The flush channels have varying pitch.

Methods are disclosed for dispersing a powder mixture of at least one metal carbide powder and at least one cobalt powder in at least one apolar medium with at least one dispersant and, optionally, at least one wetting agent. According to the invention, the dispersant is an effective dispersant for both cobalt and metal carbide surfaces. The invention is particularly useful for powder mixtures with a fine grained cobalt powder and a relatively high cobalt content. The dispersant used is an amphiphilic compound with a branched copolymer structure.

A rotary tool such as a helix drill and an end mill for example, is manufactured by forming a blank by an extrusion process, and then sintering the blank. During the extrusion, a mixture is passed through a die which provides a cylindrical shape to the outer peripheral surface of the mixture. A plurality of jaws are disposed downstream of the die for conducting the mixture. Each jaw includes a helical ridge for engaging the outer surface of the extrudate to cause a helical groove to be formed therein which constitutes a chip flute in the tool. During the extrusion, the jaws are moved away from the mixture to terminate formation of the chip groove, whereby a shank portion of the tool is formed.
