Abstract:
Halogen-containing polymer backbone chains containing grafts of polyethers derived from halogen-substituted oxiranes or oxetanes are described. The graft polymers are produced by contacting polymers containing reactive halogen with halogen-substituted oxiranes or oxetanes in the presence of a catalytic amount of an organoaluminum compound which has been modified with water, boron trifluoride and/or phosphorus pentafluoride. The graft polymers are useful as such for films, fibers, coatings, etc., and are particularly useful for blending with other materials to provide special properties such as flame resistance, impact resistance, etc.
Abstract:
The invention relates to thermosetting compositions which are blends of novel poly(arylacetylenes) and, as fluidizers, certain aromatic organic compounds containing at least two aromatic rings. The poly(arylacetylenes) are prepolymers of polyacetylenically substituted aromatic compounds, which prepolymers have a number average molecular weight of from about 900 to about 12,000 and contain from about 5 to about 20 percent by weight of acetylenic groups. Diethynylbenzene is one of the preferred monomers used in preparation of the prepolymers. Representative of the compounds containing at least two aromatic ring is benzophenone. The compositions are curable by heat to produce thermoset resins which have very desirable physical properties at both normal and high temperatures.
Abstract:
The invention concerns a process for making photographic images. The process involves the photooxygenation of a film of an extralinearly unsaturated polymer containing allylic hydrogens, followed by treatment of the exposed film with a reactant which will form a graft polymer structure in the exposed areas of the film.
Abstract:
It has been found that photopolymer elements, particularly lithographic printing plates, can be prepared by (a) treating the surface of a polymer film with a photooxygenation sensitizer, said film being a film of a polymer containing extralinear olefinic unsaturation of the type in which there is no more than one hydrogen atom on each of the double bond carbons and in which there is at least one allylic hydrogen on at least one of the carbon atoms adjacent to the double bond carbons, which allylic hydrogen is not a bridgehead carbon, (b) exposing imagewise the sensitized film to light having a wave length from about 2,000 to about 12,000 angstroms in the presence of oxygen, (c) subjecting the exposed film to contact with a vinyl monomer containing a hydrolyzable silane group to effect graft polymerization of the vinyl silane monomer onto the light exposed areas of the polymer film, (d) removing ungrafted vinyl silane monomer from unexposed areas of the polymer film, (e) hydrolyzing the silane groups of the vinyl silane monomers grafted to the polymer film, and (f) amplifying the hydrophilicity of the hydrolyzed silane groups by treating with at least one amplifying agent selected from soluble silicate solutions and colloidal silica dispersions.
Abstract:
A supply roll of longitudinally oriented synthetic sheet is provided having alternating relatively thick longitudinal ribs and relatively thin longitudinal webs. The sheet is advanced, and selected webs are torn to separate the sheet into a plurality of tapes of a desired width. The tapes are then fed directly in line into a loom or knitting machine and woven or knitted into a fabric.
Abstract:
A fluidized bed reactor comprises a stepped distributor plate having at least two fluidizing surfaces, one spaced below the other. This distributor plate permits improved distribution of feed over the fluidizing surfaces of the plate. Feed position between fluidizing surfaces avoids pyrolysis of feed and subsequent clogging of feed tube.
Abstract:
The cartridge launcher of this invention includes a housing defining a passageway which, in use, is coaxial with a conduit feeding water under pressure through the passageway. A cylindrical bore transversely intersects the passageway and rotatably receives a plug whose diameter is larger than that of the passageway. A barrel extends transversely of the plug for consecutively loading and unloading seismic cartridges at short time intervals. In its loading position, the barrel is in alignment with top and bottom registering openings in opposite walls and is exposed to atmospheric air. In its unloading position, the barrel is coaxially aligned with the passageway and the cartridge therein is propelled by water pressure. Prior to reaching its unloading position, the barrel is completely sealed off from the atmosphere and, conversely, prior to reaching its loading position, the barrel is completely sealed off from the water pressure. Thus, irrespective of the limited movement of the barrel in the bore, no air is allowed to penetrate into the water stream flowing through the passageway of the launcher. At least one pipe is connected in parallel with the passageway to provide a continuous water stream around the passageway.
Abstract:
The invention relates to polyfunctional quaternary amidoximidinium salts. These salts are precursors to polyfunctional nitrile N-oxides and, as such, are useful in the modification of ethylenically unsaturated polymers. Representative of these salts is terephthalo-bis(hydroximoyl pyridinium chloride).
Abstract:
Normally water-soluble hydroxypropyl ethers of cellulose are dispered in particulate form in a mixture of water and other hydroxypropyl cellulose solvent from a specified class. Preferred solvent is an aliphatic alcohol of 3 to 6 carbon atoms.
