摘要: A spool (10) for a strip (24) of web material such as a photographic film strip of the type having a lead end (26), the spool including a core (12) to which the lead end is attached, a pair of radially extended end flanges (18) at respective opposite ends of the core and a pair of circumferentially and axially extended shoulders (16) between the end flanges and the core for supporting at least a portion of the longitudinally extending edges of the lead end. Each of the shoulders has an axially extended frusto-conical portion adjacent to and extended from the end flange to the core for supporting one of the edges of the lead end; the axial length (1.sub.3) and cone angle (.phi.) of each frusto-conical portion being sufficient for winding the lead end about the frusto-conical portions and for permitting the first convolution of the film strip to bow inwardly toward the core, thereby radially spacing the second convolution from the first convolution and a strip of tape (22) attaching the lead end to the core.

摘要: A thermal system is disclosed in thermal communication with an electrical device. In one form the thermal system is a refrigeration system. The electrical device can be disposed within the refrigeration system such that a working fluid of the refrigeration system exchanges heat with the electrical device. In one embodiment the refrigeration system includes a container in which the electrical device is disposed. The electrical device can be an electrical motor, but other forms are contemplated. The container can be located anywhere in the thermal system. In one non-limiting embodiment the working fluid of the refrigeration system wets a stator of the motor. A partition can be used to separate the stator from the motor to keep the motor free from working fluid.

摘要: An integrated system for controlling the positioning of a rotating rotor within a compressor to enhance the performance of a gas turbine engine. The rotor being attached to a rotating shaft that is coupled to the compressor housing by a magnetic bearing system. The magnetic bearings support and position the rotor within the high speed tubomachine. During operation of the compressor the magnetic bearings non-axially position the rotor relative to the compressor housing to provide compressor instability control. By non-axially displacing the rotor relative to the compressor housing there is a resulting local disturbance to the fluid flow field, which in turn serves as the disturbance to alter the dynamics of the aerodynamic system and displace the compressor surge line.

摘要: The present invention contemplates a combination bearing for supporting a rotating rotor within a gas turbine engine. The combination bearing including a magnetic bearing system and dry solid lubricated rolling element auxiliary bearings units for sharing the shaft load. The rotating central shaft being normally supported by the active electromagnetic bearing system. The auxiliary bearing unit being soft mounted to the shaft and engine housing and rotatable with the shaft. Soft mounting of the bearings between the housing and the shaft allows a substantially stable transition from the all magnetic bearing support to a physically contacting mechanically assisted support of the shaft.

摘要: A method for analyzing and designing structures with structural aliasing. The concept of structural aliasing applies in one embodiment of the present invention to structural systems which are cyclically symmetric. In analyzing and designing structural systems such as wheel assemblies of gas turbine engines, it is possible to group the discrete components so as to aliasingly couple particular ordered excitations and harmonic families. With structural aliasing, it is possible to couple the ordered excitations and harmonic families such that resonant response of the wheel assembly does not occur within the operating range of the engine, and also to have the resonant vibratory mode excited in such a manner that the drive coupling of the wheel dampens the wheel assembly.

摘要: A system, which may be a propulsion system or a vehicle having a propulsion system, for example, an air-vehicle, a land vehicle or a marine vehicle, includes a gas turbine engine operative to drive a propulsor. The propulsor may be, for example, a fan/turbofan, a propeller, a turbine, or any rotor system for propelling an aircraft; a system for providing tractive effort for a land vehicle, such as one or more transmissions and wheel/track systems; and/or may be one or more marine propulsive devices, such as shrouded or unshrouded propellers, hydrojets and/or jet-pumps for surface vessels and/or submarines. The system also includes an auxiliary power unit. The auxiliary power unit is coupled to the gas turbine engine, and is operative to supply rotational power to the propulsor and to the impart motion to the vehicle using the propulsor, without starting the gas turbine engine.
