The invention relates to repulpable securing devices for securing repulpable articles. The securing devices are preferably in the form of straps or tapes made from extruded sheets of polyvinylalcohol or rope from extruded fibers of polyvinylalcohol. The securing devices are wrapped around pulpable articles for example, bales of pulp sheets, to hold them securely bound during transit or storage. They may also be used in machine thread-up or turn-up operations or as a handle for repulpable articles. The securing devices have the combination of properties of high tensile strength and repulpability at cold and hot water repulp temperatures. The securing devices can be repulped along with repulpable bales. These devices replace conventional wire or plastic strap which must be separately removed and disposed of, for example, at landfill sites.

A water-soluble ink-jet dye for use in ink-jet printing is designed to undergo a reaction, initiated by the loss of water and natural neutralization, as the ink dries on paper, causing the dye to (1) change and lose solubility and (2) bind to the paper. The dye comprises a polymeric chain, to which one or more chromophores are attached. Also attached to the chain are a plurality of hydroxyl or amine groups, up to approximately one-half of which are converted to carboxyl groups. The ink containing the dye is maintained at a basic pH. Upon printing on a print substrate, the dye is neutralized, causing lactone (from hydroxyl groups) or lactam (from amine groups) ring formation. The resulting reacted dye is substantially totally waterfast on the print substrate.

Hard polyvinyl alcohol gel is produced by copolymerizing a carboxylic acid vinyl ester monomer with a particular cross-linking agent and then saponifying the copolymer. This hard polyvinyl alcohol gel has excellent mechanical strength and separation ability and has no problem in copolymerizability and polymerization speed. Moreover, it shows no change in cross-linked structure before and after saponification.

Novel, non-crosslinked copolymers of vinyl trifluoroacetate (VTA) and up to 5 weight percent of the VTA of certain comonomers, such as vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, or disubstituted ethylene monomers, are disclosed. Solvolysis of these copolymers provides novel water-insoluble, non-crosslinked, poly(vinyl alcohol) copolymers which can be hydrated to copolymers having controllably variable hydrogel properties and high strength. Such poly(vinyl alcohol) copolymers are particularly desirable as ophthalmic devices such as contact lenses, corneal implants and transplants, and intraocular lenses.
