In accordance with the present invention, a heater element which includes a layer of ferromagnetic material is included in a connecting device along with a fusible material such as a solder preform. The connecting device includes, for example, a hollow sleeve formed of heat shrinkable material. The solder preform, the heater element and the heat shrinkable hollow sleeve are integrally formed as a self-contained solder sleeve device such that the heater element is separate from the objects to be joined and does not completely shield to generation of a inductive current in the objects to be joined. The connecting device thus promotes even flow and bonding of the fusible material around a junction between the objects. Further, a connecting device is provided which permits visual inspection of a connection between objects bonded upon activation of the connecting device, thus providing an opportunity to confirm the integrity of the junction.

Described herein are composite devices comprising two members. The first member is a heat recoverable driving member and the second is a metallic member associated with the first in such a way that upon heat recovery of the driver, the second member is dimensionally altered to engage a substrate. In one embodiment, useful for example as a composite coupling for joining cylindrical substrates, the driver comprises a tubular heat recoverable compression sleeve having a generally uniform interior surface. In this embodiment, the second member comprises a tubular insert snugly, and concentrically disposed within the sleeve. Although both its interior and exterior surfaces may be uniform, preferably one or both surfaces has a weakened portion to facilitate its deformation or bears integral radial teeth or a combination thereof. Upon heat recovery of the compression sleeve, the insert is compressed about the substrate.In another embodiment, the driver is positioned internally of the second member. Expansive heat recovery of the driver expands the second member to engage the substrate.In other embodiments, one or more members of the device can be made from a gall-prone metal to facilitate engagement of the device to a substrate or to facilitate engagement between members of the device.

There is described an insulating connector for the wellhead of an electrode well used for heating a subsurface formation by electrical power dissipation in the formation. The insulating connector has two iron base metal fittings (for example, steel flange halves) heat shrink fitted to a piece of ceramic pipe with a nonferrous second metal between the outer surface of the ceramic and the inner surface of the metal fittings. The nonferrous metal (for example, copper) has a lower yield than steel and a higher thermal expansion coefficient than the iron base metal and deforms, compensates and distributes the stresses caused in the shrink fitted members by the differences expansion between steel and ceramics. Other features which improve the quality and control of various parameters affecting the heat shrink fit insulating connector include the amount of interference required per inch of outside diameter of the ceramic member, length of interference surface relative to the outside diameter of the ceramic member, matching slightly tapered mating surfaces, bevelling the outside surface of the overlapping inner end of the metal members, and using a ceramic member with a flow passage larger than the flow passage through the metal members.

A tubular seal includes integral spaced lips which circumferentially engage the metallic tubes. The lips plastically deform the metallic tubes by mechanical forces resulting from a martensite to austenite transformation of the tubular seal upon application of a predetermined temperature. The sealing force is released upon application of another temperature which causes a transformation from the stronger austenite to the weaker martensite. Use of a dual acting sealing ring and driving ring circumferentially contacting the sealing ring is particularly applicable to sealing larger diameter concentric metallic members.

In the connection and encapsulation of substrates such as cables by covering members such as heat-recoverable sleeves, typically provided with adhesive or mastic linings, the formation upon heating of a desired hermetic seal between the substrate and the covering member is checked by using a device which can detect the excess air pressure which, once the hermetic seal has been made, builds up within a space between the covering member and the substrate. Preferably this is done by means of a probe which passes between the covering member and the substrate into said space and which is connected to a pressure sensitive device such as a balloon or a manometer. After use, the probe, which is preferably made from a plastics material such as nylon, can be fused or deformed to ensure that the hermetic seal remains intact.
