Abstract: A driving assistance system for a vehicle includes a control operable to control the vehicle in an autonomous or semi-autonomous mode. When operating in the autonomous mode, driving of the vehicle is controlled by the control without human intervention and, when operating in the semi-autonomous mode, an occupant of the vehicle at least partially drives the vehicle. The control learns a driving style of a particular occupant when the vehicle is being driven by that particular occupant and when the control is operating in the semi-autonomous mode. The control, when operating in the autonomous mode, controls the vehicle in accordance with the learned driving style of the particular occupant of the vehicle. Responsive to a determination of a characteristic of an occupant in the vehicle, the control, when operating in the autonomous, may adjust control of the vehicle irrespective of the learned driving style of the particular occupant.

Abstract: Methods and systems for monitoring use, determining risk, and pricing insurance policies for a vehicle having autonomous or semi-autonomous operation features are provided. In certain aspects, with the customer's permission, a computer-implemented method for updating an autonomous operation feature may be provided. An indication of a software update associated with the autonomous operation feature may be received, and several autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicles having the feature may be identified. The update may be installed within the several vehicles, such as via wireless communication. Also, a change in a risk level associated with the update to the autonomous operation feature may be determined, and an insurance discount may be determined or adjusted. As a result, an insurance discount may be provided to risk averse customers that affirmatively share their vehicle data with an insurance provider, and promptly and remotely receive new versions of software that operate autonomous vehicle safety features.

Abstract: A computer-implemented method of enhancing safe vehicle operation may include, one or more processors, (1) determining a preferred parking spot for an autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicle; (2) determining a route to the preferred parking spot from a driver drop off point; and (3) causing the autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicle to travel from the driver drop off point to the preferred parking spot following the route controlled by one or more autonomous operation features. The preferred parking spot may be a covered parking spot, a parking spot in a parking structure, or a parking spot in a residential garage. An autonomous vehicle owner may remotely direct the autonomous vehicle to autonomously return to the driver drop off point, such as via their mobile device. Insurance discounts may be provided to autonomous vehicle owners having the self-parking functionality that mitigates or prevents risk of damage to, or theft of, the vehicle.

Abstract: In a computer-implemented method, data about potential vehicle operator impairment is retrieved. The data is generated by monitoring a vehicle operator, the environment ahead of the vehicle, and/or force in one or more directions. For each of a plurality of trips, an impairment score is generated by analyzing the data about potential vehicle operator impairment, and determining whether the vehicle operator was impaired during the trip by comparing the impairment score to a threshold value. A specific time period during which the vehicle operator tends to be most impaired is determined based on the determinations of whether the vehicle operator was impaired. Recommendations to reduce operator impairment of the vehicle operator are identified and communicated to the vehicle operator.

Abstract: A method and system may identify vehicle collisions in real-time or at least near real-time based on statistical data collected from previous vehicle collisions. A user's portable computing device may obtain sensor data from sensors in the portable computing device and compare the sensor data to a statistical model indicative of a vehicle collision, where the statistical model includes sensor data characteristics which correspond to the vehicle collision. The sensor data characteristics may include several threshold sample rate ranges at which another sensor data characteristic is measured and for each of the threshold sample rate ranges, a different threshold value for the other sensor data characteristic. If the portable computing device identifies a vehicle collision based on the comparison, notifications may be sent to emergency contacts and/or emergency personnel to provide assistance to the user.

Abstract: A vehicle control apparatus includes a vehicle speed control unit for controlling the speed of a vehicle, and provisional and final anomaly determination units for determining whether or not a driver of the vehicle is in a provisional anomalous state or in a final anomalous state in which the driver has lost his/her ability to drive the vehicle. After the driver is determined to be in the provisional anomalous state, the vehicle speed control unit decelerates the vehicle at a first deceleration before the driver is determined to be in the final anomalous state. When the vehicle speed becomes lower than a second vehicle speed, the vehicle speed control unit maintains the vehicle speed at the second vehicle speed. After the driver is determined to be in the final anomalous state, the vehicle control apparatus decelerates the vehicle at a second deceleration and stops the vehicle.
