The invention relates to a so-called zero emission ‘AST-CNR/ITM system’ modular plant for removal of pollutants from flue gases produced by industrial processes. The plant comprises prefabricated modular elements with programmed and automatic operation, easy to mount and assemble on site without undergoing expensive plant stoppage. Each module or ‘reaction tower’ comprises a plurality of sections vertically arranged on top of one another, which carry out the following functions: Removal of particulate matter with treatment and removal of chemical pollutants, such as heavy metals, chlorides, fluorides Treatment and removal of SOx Treatment and removal of NOx Capture of CO2 Production of hydrogen Production of methanol. The various sections may be combined according to the requirements of the plant and of the flue gases to be treated.

In a process for converting synthesis gas to methanol, gas is introduced through an inlet of a tubular reactor. Reactants pass downwardly through at least one reactor tube to an upper surface of a catalyst carrier and into a passage defined by an inner perforated wall of a carrier container before passing radially through the catalyst bed towards a perforated outer container wall. Reaction occurs as synthesis gas contacts the catalyst. Unreacted reactant and product pass out of the container through the outer container wall and then upwardly between the inner surface of a container skirt and an outer annular container wall, and then over the end of the skirt and downwardly between the outer surface of the skirt and the inner surface of the reactor tube where heat transfer takes place. The steps are repeated at any subsequent catalyst carrier and then product is removed from the reactor outlet.

The present invention is a novel process for methanol production in a liquid phase reactor from a synthesis gas comprising of hydrogen, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide. The liquid phase reactor contains a solid catalyst suspended in methanol. In this innovation, methanol acts both as a product and as a suspension medium for the catalyst. The new innovation exploits the condensing conditions for methanol production. By operating at condensing conditions, the methanol partial pressure at equilibrium is higher than the boiling pressure of methanol at the given temperature. Hence the produced methanol of the equilibrium composition condenses creating the potential of more gas to be converted. Since equilibrium is not a limiting factor, high conversions can be obtained.

Catalytic distillation reactions are improved by having an inert condensing component present in the reaction which is boiling and condensing within the reaction which washes the catalyst in the system and, in the case of gaseous reactants, occludes a portion of the reactants to facilitate the reaction without unduly high pressures. The inert condensing component is boiling at the conditions within the reactor and is taken overhead for condensation and return as reflux. The inert condensing component may occlude the gaseous reactants allowing for better contact with the catalyst and provides the benefits of concurrent reaction and distillation, for example, the reaction of CO and H.sub.2 over a copper catalyst to produce methanol using propane as the inert condensing component.

An improved double tube reactor having a plurality of inner and outer tube assemblies each of the assemblies having a reaction annular volume between the inner tube and outer tube and a closed center plug within the inner tube forming an annular thermal exchange volume between the center plug and the inner tube to obtain desired temperature control of exothermic and endothermic catalytic chemical reactions. In one embodiment of the invention, the improved double tube reactor is used in a process for production of high purity methanol from process gas produced by steam reforming hydrocarbon feedstocks in a tube type reformer followed by removing substantially all CO.sub.2 and H.sub.2 O from the process gas, adjusting the H.sub.2 /CO molar ratio to about 2 when necessary, and feeding the adjusted process gas to a methanol synthesis reactor contacting a methanol forming catalyst not requiring CO.sub.2 activation at about 200.degree. to about 300.degree. C. to produce product gas comprising methanol, and recovering liquid methanol having purity greater than about 99.85% pure by cooling the product gas to a temperature below the boiling point of methanol and separating the liquid methanol from gaseous components of the product gas. In a preferred embodiment, process gas of H.sub.2 /CO molar ratio of about 2.0 to about 2.5 is passed through an annular thermal exchange volume between a center plug and an inner tube followed by passing the gas in contact with a catalyst in a catalyst bed between the inner tube and an outer tube of a double tube reactor assembly promoting the direct reaction of H.sub.2 and CO to product methanol.
