Hollow porous microspheres of uniform diameter and of uniform wall thickness are disclosed. The walls of the hollow microspheres comprise sintered together particles which define interconnecting voids within the walls and a single central cavity in the interior of the microspheres and inner and outer microsphere wall surfaces. The interconnecting voids are continuous and extend from the outer wall surface to the inner wall surface. The walls have uniform void content and the interconnecting voids are uniformly distributed in the walls of the hollow microspheres and the walls of the hollow microspheres are free of latent solid or liquid blowing gas materials and are substantially free of relatively thinned wall portions and bubbles. The hollow porous microspheres include microspheres in which the interconnecting voids have been closed and sealed.

The outer multilayer mat 5 is filled with the ambient gas, generally air or nitrogen, and the pressure is adjusted to the ambient pressure. The present invention relates to an insulation system for a high temperature reactor in which chlorosilanes and hydrogen gases are present. The system described comprises an inner graphite radiant heat shield and an outer carbon-based, rigid, felt insulation of high density. The inner radient heat shield provides increased chemical stability at the hot face in a chlorosilane and hydrogen reactor. Also, the inner radient heat shield reduces the temperature at the interface with the carbon-based rigid felt, thereby reducing the reactivity of the chlorosilanes with the carbon-based rigid felt. The high density of the carbon-based rigid belt further reduces radiant heat loss. More importantly, the high density of the carbon-based rigid felt excludes the highly heat conductive hydrogen gas from the voids of the flet. The insulation system, as described, allows reactors containing chlorosilanes and hydrogen gases to be operated at higher and more efficient temperatures for longer periods of time.

At least one of the layers includes a plurality of embossments therein separating the one layer from an adjacent one of the layers in the insulating area. The pad can include a single insulating area surrounded by a heat sink area and a black coating can be provided on selected portions of the layers to improve heat radiating characteristics of the pad. For instance, the heat sink area can be coated with the black coating to radiate heat away from the pad at a desired location. The pad is particularly useful in shielding a heat sensitive component on one side of the pad from a heat source on the other side of the pad.

The media pipe is arranged so as to be axially displaceable inside the envelope or envelopes on sliding parts under formation of an air gap separating the envelope from the media pipe. The sliding parts are held at the joints of the individual elements of the envelope. They preferably extend by a radially outer segment between the elements of the envelope and form a support for the media pipe together with a radially inner segment. A single annular sliding part is preferably inserted in each joint of the elements of the envelope. In the case of an annular sliding part without a segment extending between the elements of the envelope, the part is conveniently pushed outward by self-tensioning due to the elasticity of its shape.
