Abstract:
A tool for forming a composite structure may include two or more segments formed from a polymer material. The tool may further include a crush insert disposed between the two or more segments. The tool may also include a support shaft coupled between the two or more segments. A method of forming a mandrel may include forming segments of the mandrel through an additive manufacturing process. The method may further include assembling the segments relative to one another. The method may also include positioning a crush insert between each of the segments. A method of fabricating a composite structure is also disclosed.
Abstract:
It is sometimes advantageous to coat or seal the mandrel before laying on, coating, or wrapping the mandrel with composite plastic material. This invention provides improved coating with improved function that is easily removable from the cured product. The effective coating materials are applied directly to the mandrel as a coat or as a film or tape. Thermally expandable coat or film also reduces manufacturing costs for composite plastic products.
Abstract:
This invention describes novel design and construction methoc for inflatable, pressure intensifier equipment that can be used for processing composites structures. The equipment can be used as a manufacturing and processing platform wherever low pressure and high temperature inputs are required in an enclosed volume.
Abstract:
A method of making a portion of a bicycle frame including positioning a low-friction mandrel adjacent a flexible mandrel with a first fibrous material in between. The mandrels are wrapped with second fibrous material, and the mandrels are inserted into a mold. The second fibrous material is cured to produce a cured assembly, the cured assembly is withdrawn from the mold, and the low-friction mandrel is removed from the cured assembly to produce an internal passageway. The flexible mandrel can includes a recess, and the step of positioning can include inserting the low-friction mandrel into the recess of the flexible mandrel. Preferably, the low-friction mandrel has a cross sectional shape that substantially matches a cross-sectional shape of the recess. The invention is also embodied in a portion of a bicycle frame, such as a portion of the frame during the manufacturing process, and having similar features as recited above.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for fabricating a composite part with a shape memory polymer (SMP) apparatus usable as both a rigid lay-up tool and as a bladder. The SMP apparatus may be heated until malleable, shaped, and then cooled in a desired rigid tool configuration. For example, cavities may be formed into the SMP apparatus for nesting components therein to co-bond or co-cure with the composite part. The composite material may be applied onto the SMP apparatus in the rigid tool configuration and then placed into a rigid external tool and heated to composite cure temperatures at which the SMP apparatus is malleable. A pressure differential may be induced which urges the SMP apparatus to compress the composite material against the rigid external tool. When the composite material is cured, the SMP apparatus may be urged away from the cure composite material and removed from within the composite part.
Abstract:
An actuating system of sectors of a device for producing an airplane fuselage in which a lamination mandrel comprises a plurality of sectors angularly spaced about the axis and mobile along guides between: an expanded lamination position and a contracted disassembling position. Each sector is provided with an actuating system of the screw—nut screw type in which a threaded element is rotated about a rotation axis by a motor. The threaded element comprises an internal shaft made of a first material and extending along the rotation axis and an external tubular portion made of a second material, mounted axially on a portion of the shaft and provided externally with a thread.
Abstract:
A structural member such as a strut includes a composite material tube having metal end fittings that are attached to the tube by co-bonded, double shear joints. The double shear bond joint construction reduces the residual stress on the bonds that result from mismatch of the coefficients of thermal expansion of the composite tube and the metal end fittings. The ends of the fittings that are bonded to the tube may include a stepped profile that functions to limit the peak stresses in the bonds.

Abstract:
An apparatus for fabric windings includes a rotating mandrel and a plurality of fabric supply rolls. The rotating mandrel pulls sheets of continuous fabric from the plurality of fabric supply rolls. The rotating mandrel includes a main body having an inner end and an outer end, the outer end having a diameter greater than a diameter of the inner end. The main body of the mandrel is generally cylindrical with two truncated surfaces opposite one another.
