    Abstract: A first communication device determines that a second communication device is capable of using a transparent implicit beamforming technique to determine steering matrices for transmitting to the first communication device via a forward multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication channel. In response to determining that the second communication device is capable of using the transparent implicit beamforming technique, the first communication device transmits at least a certain number of data units to the second communication device using a maximum number of spatial streams during a time period of a certain duration when the first communication device is otherwise using less than the maximum number of spatial streams to transmit other data units to the second communication device. Transmitting the certain number of data units using the maximum number of spatial streams permits the second communication device to use the transparent implicit beamforming technique to develop one or more steering matrices.

    Abstract: A method for generating an orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) data unit conforming to a first communication protocol for transmission via a communication channel is described. A first field is generated that conforms to a second communication protocol and has an integer number of OFDM symbols LN having a periodicity LP. A second field is generated that conforms to the first communication protocol, has an integer number of OFDM symbols HN having a periodicity HP, and is based on a frequency sequence having non-zero values at an integer interval K. The first and second fields are modulated using a tone spacing LTS and a tone spacing HTS, respectively. LTS is a multiple M of HTS. The OFDM data unit is generated to include a preamble including the first and second fields. The second field is generated such that HP is proportional to LP and K and inversely proportional to M.

    Abstract: In a method for generating a physical layer (PHY) data unit, pilot tone contribution sequence values for a first set of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols and for a second set of OFDM symbols are determined using a pilot mapping function. The first set is to be included in a signal field of the data unit, and the second set is to be included in a data portion of the data unit. The first set and the second set are generated to include pilot tones modulated based on the pilot tone contribution sequence values determined, respectively, for the first set of OFDM symbols and for the second set of OFDM symbols. The signal field is generated to include the first set, and the data portion is generated to include the second set. The data unit is generated to include at least the signal field and the data portion.
