Abstract: A first communication device determines that a second communication device is capable of using a transparent implicit beamforming technique to determine steering matrices for transmitting to the first communication device via a forward multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication channel. In response to determining that the second communication device is capable of using the transparent implicit beamforming technique, the first communication device transmits at least a certain number of data units to the second communication device using a maximum number of spatial streams during a time period of a certain duration when the first communication device is otherwise using less than the maximum number of spatial streams to transmit other data units to the second communication device. Transmitting the certain number of data units using the maximum number of spatial streams permits the second communication device to use the transparent implicit beamforming technique to develop one or more steering matrices.

Abstract: A first wireless communication device including a timing module and a fine timing measurement module. The timing module is configured to provide a first timer value. The fine timing measurement module is configured to receive, from a second wireless communication device, a first request to perform a fine timing measurement to determine a distance between the first wireless communication device and the second wireless communication device, and transmit a first response including a first time to start a burst period for performing the fine timing measurement. The first time is one of included in the request received from the second wireless communication device and based on the first timer value. The fine timing measurement module is further configured to perform the fine timing measurement in the burst period starting at the first time.

Abstract: In a method for generating a data unit for transmission via a communication channel, the data unit conforming to a first communication protocol, one or more orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols of the data unit are generated. Each OFDM symbol of the one or more OFDM symbols (i) occupies a first bandwidth, (ii) is generated with a first tone spacing, and (iii) includes a set of pilot tones. The first tone spacing is a fraction 1/N of a second tone spacing, the second tone spacing defined for the first bandwidth by a second communication protocol. The set of pilot tones includes a same number of pilot tones as defined for the first bandwidth by the second communication protocol. The data unit is generated to include the one or more OFDM symbols in a data portion of the data unit.

Abstract: A method in a communication network includes an access point, using a multiple input multiple output antenna configuration, sending out a sounding packet to a plurality of client stations. The client stations determine a channel estimation of the sounding packet, but only a channel estimation of a portion of the entire sounding packet to avoid processing the entire packet. The resulting partial estimation is sent to the access point for using in transmit beamforming. In other examples, the client station sends a reverse link sounding packet over a portion a channel having a bandwidth less than the sounding packet, and from this the access point determines partial channel estimations and transmit beamforming conditions.

Abstract: A method for generating an orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) data unit conforming to a first communication protocol for transmission via a communication channel is described. A first field is generated that conforms to a second communication protocol and has an integer number of OFDM symbols LN having a periodicity LP. A second field is generated that conforms to the first communication protocol, has an integer number of OFDM symbols HN having a periodicity HP, and is based on a frequency sequence having non-zero values at an integer interval K. The first and second fields are modulated using a tone spacing LTS and a tone spacing HTS, respectively. LTS is a multiple M of HTS. The OFDM data unit is generated to include a preamble including the first and second fields. The second field is generated such that HP is proportional to LP and K and inversely proportional to M.

Abstract: One or more first padding bits are added to information bits to be included in a data portion of a data unit such that the information bits, after being encoded, fill one or more OFDM symbols up to a boundary within a last OFDM symbol. The information bits and the first padding bits are encoded to generate coded bits. After encoding, coded bits corresponding to the last OFDM symbol are padded, or constellation points generated based on the coded bits corresponding to the last OFDM symbol are padded, such that the padded coded bits or the padded constellation points occupy a remaining portion of the last OFDM symbol after the boundary. The last OFDM symbol of the data portion is generated to include the coded information bits corresponding to the last OFDM symbol, the first padding bits and second padding bits or padding constellation points added after encoding.

Abstract: In a system having a first communication device with a first plurality of radio-frequency (RF) chains coupled to a first plurality of antennas and a second communication device with a second plurality of RF chains coupled to a second plurality of antennas, the second communication device receives consecutive training packets that were transmitted by the first communication device, the consecutive training packets having been produced at the first communication device by a power level rule to the first plurality of RF chains. The second communication device determines respective channel measurements corresponding to the consecutive training packets based on the power level rule, and selects a transmit parameter based on the respective channel measurements, the transmit parameter to be used by the first communication device when transmitting to the second communication device. The second communication device transmits and indication of the selected transmit parameter to the first communication device.

Abstract: In a method for generating a physical layer (PHY) data unit, pilot tone contribution sequence values for a first set of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) symbols and for a second set of OFDM symbols are determined using a pilot mapping function. The first set is to be included in a signal field of the data unit, and the second set is to be included in a data portion of the data unit. The first set and the second set are generated to include pilot tones modulated based on the pilot tone contribution sequence values determined, respectively, for the first set of OFDM symbols and for the second set of OFDM symbols. The signal field is generated to include the first set, and the data portion is generated to include the second set. The data unit is generated to include at least the signal field and the data portion.

Abstract: Embodiments described herein provides a system for detecting data received in a low power low rate (LPLR) data frame format. The system includes a receiver and control circuitry. The receiver is configured to receive a data frame comprising an LPLR preamble portion and an LPLR data portion following the LPLR preamble portion. The LPLR preamble portion and the LPLR data portion occupy a bandwidth that is less than an allowed bandwidth. The control circuitry is configured to determine a mode of the data frame based on whether the data frame has an additional portion, and detect a data field in the LPLR preamble portion from the data frame based on the mode of the data frame.

Abstract: A respective primary sub-channel block is statically allocated to each of the two or more communication devices in an orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) group of communication devices. The respective statically allocated primary sub-channel blocks remain allocated to the second communication devices for transmission of at least two PHY data units. At least some of remaining sub-channel blocks are dynamically allocated among the two or more communication devices for transmission of each of the at least two PHY data units. Indications of the respective sub-channel blocks allocated to the two or more communication devices. A physical layer (PHY) data unit is transmitted to the two or more communication devices or is received from the two or more communication devices. The PHY data unit includes respective orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) data units transmitted using respective sub-channel blocks allocated to the two or more communication devices.
