摘要: Methods are provided for treating intimately dispersed mixtures of water, bitumen, and fine clay particles, such as oil sands mature fine tailings (MFT). Select methods use dissolved silicate ions and a base (alkali), optionally in combination with a biopolymer, to flocculate a slurry. A mixing regime is disclosed involving the addition to MFT of silicate ions in solution and alkali, to initiate aggregation/destabilization of clay particles. Methods are exemplified that provide distinct sediment layers in conjunction with the release of residual bitumen (for example 40-50% of the initial bitumen content). In these exemplified embodiments, a densely packed bottom layer containing ˜75 wt. % solids showed high yield stress values (3.5-5.5 kPa) and entrapped little residual bitumen (0.2-0.3 wt. %). The methods accordingly segregate a material suitable for reclamation.

摘要: We have discovered that heating PFAS in the presence of silica resulted in destruction of over 90% of PFAS under surprisingly mild conditions. Experimental results are presented showing that the reaction occurs along with etching of the silica glass, presumably caused by HF created during the reaction or in previous reactions. The methods of destroying PFAS are especially effective for treating relatively concentrated solutions such as those commonly encountered in AFFF waste stock and cleanup near fire-fighting training sites, as well as concentrated waste solutions from industrial sites involving the manufacture or application of PFAS.

摘要: A method is provided for recovering barium sulfate from a contaminated water source comprising barium cation. The method involves combining the contaminated water source with a source of sulfate ion, thereby forming a modified contaminated water source. The method includes forming precipitated barium sulfate within the modified contaminated water source; isolating precipitated barium sulfate from the modified contaminated water source, thereby forming isolated precipitated barium sulfate; dewatering the isolated precipitated barium sulfate, thereby forming a low-moisture precipitated barium sulfate; combining the low-moisture precipitated barium sulfate with clean water to form a slurry comprising precipitated barium sulfate; subjecting the slurry to density separation to form a refined barium sulfate; and subjecting the refined barium sulfate to particle size reduction and/or particle size classification to yield a recovered barium sulfate.

摘要: A treatment for a large body of water to make the water suitable for recreational purposes is disclosed. A sedimentation zone and a dissipation zone are designated in the water body. A disinfection method based on a CT index and a flocculant composition are utilized in the sedimentation zone to aid in the settling of different microorganisms and/or contaminants. Also, the water in the sedimentation zone is minimally disturbed to facilitate the sedimentation process. A permanent chlorine residual is maintained in the dissipation zone by adding an efficient amount of a chlorine disinfectant such that at least a 0.5 mg/L free chlorine level is maintained in the water volume. Water is injected into the dissipation zone by means of one or more inlet nozzles. Along with natural currents produced by winds and water temperature differences, a water dissipation pattern from within the dissipation zone into the sedimentation zone is generated.
