Abstract: Apparatus and method for adjusting a steering wheel extending from a front console of a vehicle in which at least one motor is coupled to the steering column or steering wheel and is at least automatically controllable without manual intervention to adjust the steering wheel relative to the front console. A system determines at least one morphological characteristic of a driver and a control circuit is coupled to the system and the motor(s) for automatically controlling the motor(s) based on the morphological characteristic(s). In this manner, the position of the steering wheel can be adjusted for each driver and can be changed when the driver of the vehicle varies between sequential uses.

Abstract: A low onset dual stage hybrid inflator comprising a diffuser subassembly, a gas generator subassembly, and a pressure vessel. The dual stage inflator offers a variety of different output levels of inflation gas. The four main deployment scenarios for the dual stage inflator are primary output, staged output, full output, and secondary only. For primary output, only the stored gas is released from the inflator. For staged output, the stored gas is released and after a short period of time (i.e. 30 ms), the gas generant is ignited. For the full output, the stored gas is released from the dual stage inflator at the same time the gas generant is ignited. For secondary output, only the gas generant subassembly is fired, and the hot gases from the gas generant subassembly mix with the stored gas. The combination of the hot gas and the stored gas has sufficient pressure to rupture the burst disk.

Abstract: A fabric valve is disclosed that is made of a fabric blank folded in a pattern that promotes the flow of fluid in one direction along an axis of the fabric valve but restricts the flow in the opposite direction along the same axis. The fabric valve is easy to construct and is made by a series of folds. The fabric valve may be particularly suitable for use with inflatable safety devices used in vehicles, such as air bags and air curtains, to restrict backflow of gas from a given air bag when pressure, is applied to the bag. A method of making the fabric valve and a system incorporating the fabric valve are also disclosed.

Abstract: A vehicle including a system for obtaining information about occupants of the vehicle including a rear-view mirror including a mirror part and a support for mounting the mirror part to the vehicle (such as to a windshield of the vehicle), a wave-receiving system arranged on the mirror for receiving waves from spaces above seats of the vehicle in which occupants would normally be situated and a processor coupled to the wave-receiving system and arranged to obtain information about the occupants based on the waves received by the wave-receiving system. The wave-receiving system may include an infrared receiver, a transmitter/receiver capable of transmitting and receiving waves, an ultrasonic wave receiver and/or an array for displaying infrared light reflected from or generated by the occupants. Based on the waves received by the wave-receiving system, the processor may identify or ascertain the identity of the occupants, determine the position or movement of the occupants and/or determine the distance between the wave-receiving system and the occupants. The processor may embody a pattern recognition system for obtaining information about the occupants based on training designed to create an algorithm capable of processing data on the waves received by the wave-receiving system into information about the occupants.

Abstract: An inflator for inflating an airbag has a vessel for containing compressed gas. The vessel has a gas outlet aperture. A support element is located in the gas outlet aperture with a sealing element next to the side of the support element that faces the interior of the vessel. A locking element is disposed in a locking position between a side of the support element that faces away from the interior of the vessel and a first abutment that is rigid with respect to the vessel. The support element is further supported by a second abutment that is rigid with respect to the vessel. A gas releasing device moves the locking element from the locking position to open the gas outlet aperture.

Abstract: An electromagnetic drive unit, particularly for valve slides of solenoid valves, includes a magnetically conductive housing which is connectable to a gas generator for airbags and a coil body provided with an exciting coil mounted in the housing, and a displaceable armature pretensioned by a spring and connected to the valve slide. The coil body with the exciting coil is closed off toward the open side of the housing by a correspondingly shaped metal cover. The cover is provided with a central hollow cylinderical portion which is surrounded with play by a cup-shaped member. The cup-shaped member guides the valve slide which is supported by the armature.
