A method of rolling metal in a plurality of rolling stands with each of the stands having two or more rolls. The method includes first polishing the surfaces of the rolls to a mirror finish, after which the roll surfaces are textured with a plurality of minute micron size craters. The roll surface and craters are then coated with a dense, hard material before the rolls are lubricated and used to reduce the thickness of the metal in the stands. To this end, the metal is directed through the stands, the craters being capable of retaining and carrying lubricant into the bites of all of the rolls without substantial adherence of metal to the roll surfaces and without substantial generation of wear debris on the surfaces of the rolls and rolled material.

An apparatus is provided for cleaning and polishing the surface of cylindrical rolls. The apparatus is characterized by a shaft connected at each end thereof to end units. The end units are movable toward and away from the surface of the roll to be cleaned and polished. The end units are also adapted to reciprocate the shaft along its longitudinal axis. At least one abrasive stone attachment means, including an abrasive stone, is attached to the shaft such that the abrasive stone can be positioned in substantial contact with the surface of the roll.

A grinding machine that can continuously grind a rod-like object rotating around its axis supported by a head and a tailstock. Grinding tools are attached to a rotating circular plate which is provided on a carriage that moves along a bed adjacent the axis of the rod-like object at a constant rate to grind the outer surface of the rod-like object. The circular plate includes a front side on which a plurality of first and second grinding tools are mounted. The grinding tools include those for roughing and those for finishing and are mounted along imaginary circles of different radii according to their use in grinding. The plate can be moved up and down so that the rod-like object can be ground with the pertinent tools. That is, a different degree of grinding ranging from roughing to finishing can be performed with different tools in a continuous manner by only changing the height of the circular plate without exchanging the tools.

A fluidic sensor within the gauge determines the distance to the roll surface. The change in roll diameter is detected by changes of air gap between sensor and roll surface. A method and apparatus are provided for controlled grinding of roller surfaces. A rotary drive rotates a roller and a grinding wheel is rotated, which has a rotation axis parallel to the axis of the roller. The rotating grinding wheel is pressed against the rotating roller at a certain position along the axis of the roller. The grinding wheel is moved along the direction of its axis. Simultaneously, the surface of the roller is tested with an eddy current test probe disposed substantially at a corresponding position along the axis of the roller as the grinding wheel, however, the eddy current test probe is staggered with respect to the grinding wheel by a suitable angle around the roller axis. The signals from the eddy current test probe are processed by an analog-digital converter and then by a digital processor.

There is disclosed an apparatus for giving a satin finish to the surface of a crowned roll. A plurality of electrode heads are divided and arranged along the axis of rotation of the crowned roll to be worked, and one or a plurality of rectangular electrodes are mounted at a predetermined spacing on each of the electrode heads. The discharge gap of each rectangular electrode is controlled by a servomechanism at a predetermined value and it is also fed traversely a predetermined distance by a traverse feed mechanism. The electrode is rectractably mounted on the electrode head and it is fixed in position so that the discharge surface of the electrode is projected into contact with the roll surface of the crowned roll. The discharge electrode surface of each rectangular electrode is initially flat and this discharge surface is consumed to conform with the shape or contour of the roll surface upon initiation of discharge.
