A two-stage downflow flue gas treatment condensing heat exchanger system allows for flue gas to be passed into a two-stage housing at an upper end of the housing. The flue gas is channeled through a first stage of the housing having a first condensing heat exchanger which cools the flue gas. The flue gas is then channeled through a second stage having a second condensing heat exchanger which is located directly beneath the first stage and the first condensing heat exchanger for further cooling the flue gas. The flue gas travels in a downward direction only through the housing and exits the housing at the lower end of the housing beneath the second stage. A collection tank is located beneath the second stage of the housing for collecting liquids, condensate, particulate and reaction product.

A process for desulfurization of fuel combustion gases and a new reactor wherein the primary flue gas stream containing sulfur oxides and alkaline oxide solids flows into the reactor vessel. A plurality of baffle columns is positioned at the top of the reactor vessel which serve to separate the primary stream into a plurality of first streams containing substantially all of the alkaline oxide solids and a plurality of second streams comprising substantially solids-free gas. The first streams are wetted after which they recombine with the second streams to produce reaction product sulfates and sulfites. The reaction product is substantially dry because the hot second streams cause evaporation of substantially all of the moisture from the wetted first streams.

The flue gases formed in the combustion chamber of the incinerator furnace, after they have reached a temperature of about 450.degree. C., are brought to a temperature of 200.degree.-250.degree. C. by shock-type cooling. Before this shock-cooling (quenching), heat recovery from the flue gases is carried out in a high-temperature stage from 1000.degree.-1200.degree. C. to about 450.degree. C. and, after the shock-cooling, in a low-temperature stage from 200.degree.-250.degree. C. to about 150.degree. C. As a result, a de novo synthesis is avoided in which dioxins and furans are formed from the components of the flue gases and the fly ash.

An improved, three-path continuous cellular drift eliminator and method for counterflow cooling towers is provided which gives enhanced water removal without undue pressure drops, and a desirable water particle size distribution in the air leaving the tower, so that excessive water coating on adjacent equipment and structures is avoided. The eliminator preferably includes a plurality of generally upright, discrete, gap-free continuous cells which present three air diversion sections along the length thereof in order to divert fill-derived air along a serpentine path for drift elimination purposes. The third and final section of the eliminator serves to direct the exiting air generally vertically for proper discharge thereof to the atmosphere. The eliminator is preferably fabricated using spaced apart members having planar panels, with corrugated elements therebetween, so as to cooperatively define elongated, continuous eliminator cells. Test results demonstrate that the eliminator hereof gives significantly improved results as compared with a prior cellular-type eliminator.
