    摘要: At the time of coding input image and audio data, and decoding coded video and audio data by using a computer, the amount of computation required per unit time becomes enormous, whereby it has been very difficult to carry out coding and decoding in real time. As for coding methods in accordance with the present invention, a first method is a method wherein signal format conversion, orthogonal transform and variable-length coding are carried out continuously with predetermined small areas in a frame used as units, and the number of memory access times is decreased, whereby high-speed processing is attained. A second method is a method wherein orthogonal transform computation is omitted by using orthogonal transform coefficients, whereby processing time is shortened. A third method is a method wherein, in additions and subtractions used for orthogonal transform and the like, the number of registers to be used is decreased, and the number of memory access times is reduced, whereby high-speed processing is attained. The decoding method in accordance with the present invention is a method wherein, in variable-length decoding, table size is not made larger, the number of table access times per code word is set to 2 at the maximum, and plural code words are decoded by one table access operation, whereby high-speed decoding is attained.

    摘要: In a large-scale video-on-demand (VOD) system, the scalability and the provision of truly interactive functions are two difficult problems which have not been resolved satisfactorily. It is easy to provide fully interactive functions using unicast streams but these systems are limited in their scalability which affect the cost of service provisioning. Batching systems based on multicast streaming, on the other hand, can increase the scalability but it is difficult to provide interactive functions on these systems. This invention provides a media delivery system having a novel architecture aiming at serving millions of users in a metropolitan area. It features hybrid multicast-unicast streaming to achieve both scalability and full interactivity through the provision of distributed interactive servers, which cached the multicast media streams generated by the media servers. The interactive servers may also provide fault tolerant routing and error recovery.

    摘要: A system and method for decoding a signal comprising fixed-length data (FL-data) and variable length data (VL-data) is disclosed. In one embodiment, groups of fixed length data (FL-data) and blocks of variable length data (VL-data) are stored in a predetermined space. Each group of FL-data corresponds to a block of VL-data. The blocks of VL-data are retrieved by referencing corresponding groups of FL-data. In one embodiment, this system and method permits bidirectional recovery of data. In one embodiment, this is used in the transmission of video signals over a potentially lossy communications channel.
