Abstract: The technology relates to fine maneuver control of large autonomous vehicles that employ multiple sets of independently actuated wheels. The control is able to optimize the turning radius, effectively negotiate curves, turns, and clear static objects of varying heights. Each wheel or wheel set is configured to adjust individually via control of an on-board computer system. Received sensor data and a physical model of the vehicle can be used for route planning and selecting maneuver operations in accordance with the additional degrees of freedom provided by the independently actuated wheels. This can include making turns, moving into or out of parking spaces, driving along narrow or congested roads, construction zones, loading docks, etc. A given maneuver may include maintaining a minimum threshold distance from a neighboring vehicle or other object.

Abstract: Systems, methods, and non-transitory computer-readable media can access a plurality of parameter-based encodings providing a structured representation of an environment captured by one or more sensors associated with a plurality of vehicles traveling through the environment. A given parameter-based encoding of the environment identifies one or more agents that were detected by a vehicle within the environment and respective location information for the one or more agents within the environment. The plurality of parameter-based encodings can be clustered into one or more clusters of parameter-based encodings. At least one scenario associated with the environment can be determined based at least in part on the one or more clusters of parameter-based encodings.

Abstract: A method of operating an apparatus using a control system that includes at least one neural network. The method includes receiving an input value captured by the apparatus, processing the input value using the at least one neural network of the control system implemented on first one or more solid-state chips, and obtaining an output from the at least one neural network resulting from processing the input value. The method may also include processing the output with another neural network implemented on solid-state chips to determine whether the output breaches a predetermined condition that is unchangeable after an initial installation onto the control system. The aforementioned another neural network is prevented from being retrained. The method may also include the step of using the output from the at least one neural network to control the apparatus unless the output breaches the predetermined condition. Similar corresponding apparatuses are described.

Abstract: Aspects of the technology relate to assisting a passenger in an autonomous vehicle without a driver. For instance, after a door of the vehicle is opened, a predetermined period of time may be waited by processors of computing devices of the vehicle. After waiting the predetermined period of time and when the vehicle's door remains open, a set of instructions for closing the vehicle's door may be played by the processors through a speaker of the vehicle. Once the door of the vehicle is closed, an announcement may be played by the processors through the speaker requesting that the passenger press a first button to initiate a ride to a destination. In response to the first button being pressed, the ride to the destination may be initiated by the processors by maneuvering the vehicle autonomously to the destination.
