Abstract: A video coding system generating candidates for Merge Mode with Motion Vector Difference (MMVD) with reduced resource usage is provided. The system receives data to be encoded or decoded as a current block of a current picture of a video. The system identifies multiple MMVD candidates for different offset positions based on a merge candidate of the current block. The system generates reference samples for the identified MMVD candidates. The system reconstructs the current block or encodes the current block into a bitstream by using the generated reference samples. The system processes the MMVD candidates in separate groups: a first group of vertical MMVD candidates and a second group of horizontal MMVD candidates. The system generates the reference samples for the identified MMVD candidates by applying a vertical filter to source reference samples of horizontal MMVD candidates and then applying a horizontal filter to outputs of the vertical filter.

Abstract: Video encoding methods and apparatuses in a video encoding system receive an input residual signal of a current block by a shared transform circuit, apply horizontal transform and vertical transform by a shared transform circuit to generate transform coefficients, apply quantization and inverse quantization to generate recovered transform coefficients, apply inverse vertical transform and inverse horizontal transform to the recovered transform coefficients by the shared transform circuit to generate a reconstructed residual signal for the current block, and encode the current block based on quantized levels of the current block. The shared transform circuit and a coefficient buffer in the folded 4-time transform architecture reuse computation resources in each transform stage. In some embodiments of the folded 4-time transform architecture, a hierarchical design for block size grouping is implemented with fixed throughput for uniform hardware scheduling.

Abstract: The techniques described herein relate to methods, apparatus, and computer readable media configured to decode and/or encode video data. If the current coding block was using more than one hypotheses of prediction data to generate the prediction data, first prediction data is determined for a current coding block of a picture generated using a first prediction mode, and second prediction data is determined for the current coding block generated using a second prediction mode. Information derived from at least one of the first prediction mode and the second prediction mode can be stored. The stored information can be referenced by the subsequent coding blocks.

Abstract: A method and apparatus of Inter prediction for video coding using Multi-hypothesis (MH) are disclosed. If an MH mode is used for the current block: at least one MH candidate is derived using reduced reference data by adjusting at least one coding-control setting; an Inter candidate list is generated, where the Inter candidate list comprises said at least one MH candidate; and current motion information associated with the current block is encoded using the Inter candidate list at the video encoder side or the current motion information associated with the current block is decoded at the video decoder side using the Merge candidate list. The coding control setting may correspond to prediction direction setting, filter tap setting, block size of reference block to be fetched, reference picture setting or motion limitation setting.

Abstract: A combined prediction mode for encoding or decoding a pixel block of a video picture is provided. When it is determined that the combined prediction mode is used, a video codec generates an intra predictor for the current block based on a selected intra-prediction mode and a merge-indexed predictor for the current block based on a selected merge candidate from a merge candidates list. The video codec then generates a final predictor for the current block based on the intra predictor and the merge-indexed predictor. The final predictor is then used to encode or decode the current block.

Abstract: A video decoder that implements a mutually exclusive grouping of coding modes is provided. The video decoder receives data for a block of pixels to be decoded as a current block of a current picture of a video. When a first coding mode for the current block is enabled, a second coding mode is disabled for the current block, wherein the first and second coding modes specify different methods for computing an inter-prediction for the current block. The current block is decoded by using an inter-prediction that is computed according to an enabled coding mode.

Abstract: Video processing methods and apparatuses implemented in a video encoding or decoding system with conditional secondary transform signaling. The video encoding system determines and applies a transform operation to residuals of a transform block to generate final transform coefficients, and adaptively signals a secondary transform index according to a position of a last significant coefficient in the transform block. A value of the secondary transform index is determined according to the transform operation. The video decoding system parses last significant coefficient position syntax of each transform block in the current block from a video bitstream to determine a position of a last significant coefficient for each transform block, and infers inverse secondary transform is not applied to the current block according to the positions of the last significant coefficients; otherwise, the video decoding system determines an inverse transform operation by parsing a secondary transform index from the video bitstream.

Abstract: A video encoder receives raw pixel data to be encoded as a current block of a current picture of a video into a bitstream. The video encoder identifies multiple candidate bi-prediction positions for the current block, including a center position, a first set of offset positions, and a second set of offset positions. The first set of offset positions and the second set of offset positions interleave each other. The encoder computes distortion values for each of the candidate bi-prediction positions based on several possible weighting parameter values. The distortion values for the center position are based on each of the several possible weighting parameter values. The distortion values for the first set of offset positions are based on a first subset of the possible weighting parameter values. The distortion values for the second set of offset positions are based on a second subset of the possible weighting parameter values.

Abstract: A method for multiple transform selection (MTS) is provided. A video decoder receives data from a bitstream for a block of pixels to be decoded as a current block of a current picture of a video. The decoder sets a zero-out indication based on one or more non-zero coefficient indications of subblocks of the current block. When the zero-out indication indicates that a zero-out region has no non-zero coefficient, the decoder parses the bitstream for an MTS index. When the zero-out indication indicates that the zero-out region has at least one non-zero coefficient, the decoder sets the MTS index to a default value without parsing the MTS index from the bitstream. The decoder selects a transform mode according to the MTS index for the current block. The decoder reconstructs the current block by using the selected transform mode.
