摘要: Methods and transcoding proxies for transcoding media streams are described. In one embodiment, a method for transcoding a media stream that is delivered to an end-user device over a communications network involves selecting a transcoding technique for the media stream, transcoding a portion of the media stream using the selected transcoding technique, streaming the transcoded portion of the media stream to the end-user device, while the transcoded portion of the media stream is being streamed to the end-user device, detecting a change in a condition of the communications network, selecting a different transcoding technique in response to the change in the condition of the communications network, transcoding a subsequent portion of the media stream using the different transcoding technique, and streaming the transcoded subsequent portion of the media stream to the end-user device. Other embodiments are also described.

摘要: A system and method for allowing requests generated as a result of dynamic URLs to be efficiently looked up in a cache are provided. The system and method involve receiving a request for a content element, the request being generated from a dynamic URL. A static content element identifier is generated from the request. In an embodiment, the static content element identifier includes only the content identification parameters and the dynamic parameters are removed. The static content element identifier is then used to determine whether the content element is in the cache.

摘要: A drive system for a refrigeration compressor such as is used in a natural gas liquefaction plant, allowing the desired compressor speed and maximum turbine efficiency to be maintained throughout varying ambient temperature conditions. A gas turbine is used with an electric starter motor with drive-through capability located on a common drive shaft between the turbine and the compressor. A variable frequency drive (VFD) is connected between the electrical power grid and the electric motor for smooth startups, but also to allow excess turbine mechanical power to be converted to electrical power by the motor operating as a generator, and delivered to the grid at the grid frequency. Pulse width modulation technology may be used to reduce harmonic distortion in the VFD's output. The starter motor also functions as a helper motor when the turbine output is insufficient to drive the compressor at the rotational speed needed to meet throughput requirements.

摘要: A system and technique enables network level locks, called network mutexes, on network objects such as databases and ports. A remote data server (RDS) element resides on a server for receiving network mutex (NM) request from remote clients. A NM request includes, in part, a network mutex name, a locking priority, identification of the requesting element and client, and an indication as to whether the network mutex may be shared with other equivalent applications or elements. The RDS element grants the NM request when no other application or element has established the network mutex or the network mutex is held by an equivalent application or element and is in a sharable status. Network mutexes are removed when the remote locking client transmits a NM unlock request. Network mutexes enable central control of the locking and unlocking of network objects.

摘要: Optical energy at a predetermined frequency or narrow band of frequencies is tapped from an optical fibre by causing spatially periodic deformation of the fibre such as to produce coupling of optical energy between modes of the fibre, for example between the core and cladding of a single mode fibre, at the predetermined frequency and removing the optical energy at the predetermined frequency, for example by means of a cladding mode tap for a single mode fibre. If the deformation means includes a mechanical grating then tuning of the coupling frequency can be achieved by changing the relative orientation (O) of the fibre and the grating.

摘要: An optical transducer is provided that has a flexible transducer member having a set of grooves in one of its major surfaces. Flexure of the transducer member produces a strain pattern that extends across an optical waveguide in the member. This strain pattern has a pitch that will diffract light of a suitable wavelength propagating in the optical waveguide.
