摘要: Provided is an in-store dual-mode communication system in which shelves are disposed within a commercial space. A server is coupled to the Internet and/or a wide-area network and is configured to send and receive communications. Also provided are light-based messaging units that are located on and/or attached to such shelves, each: 1) having a light source, 2) receiving a communication from the server, and 3) in response to receipt of such communication, turning the light source on and off so as to broadcast a digital message that was included within such communication, as a binary-encoded digital signal corresponding to on/off states of the light source. A user device: (i) receives, via its light sensor, and then decodes the binary-encoded digital signal from a light-based messaging unit in order to obtain the digital message that corresponds to it; and also (ii) communicates with the server via its wireless interface.

摘要: A system, comprising an optical transmitter configured to modulate a pulsed laser signal based on a plurality of data signals to form a plurality of modulated optical data signals, optical time division multiplex the plurality of modulated optical data signals to obtain a multiplexed optical data signal, and transmit the multiplexed optical data signal together with an optical clock signal derived from the pulsed laser signal; and an optical receiver that includes a clock recovery branch configured to recover the optical clock signal into a plurality of phase-shifted recovered optical clock signals and a data branch with a plurality of saturable absorbers (SA), each SA being in optical communication with one of the phase-shifted recovered optical clock signals and configured to receive the multiplexed optical data signal and to transmit of one of the plurality of modulated optical data signals according to the recovered optical clock signal.

摘要: A transmitter can include a laser operable to output an optical signal; a digital signal processor operable to receive user data and provide electrical signals based on the data; and a modulator operable to modulate the optical signal to provide optical subcarriers based on the electrical signals. A first one of the subcarriers carriers carries first TDMA encoded information and second TDMA encoded information, such that the first TDMA encoded information is indicative of a first portion of the data and is carried by the first one of the subcarriers during a first time slot, and the second TDMA encoded information is indicative of a second portion of the data and is carried by the first one of the subcarriers during a second time slot. The first TDMA encoded information is associated with a first node remote from the transmitter and the second TDMA encoded information is associated with a second node remote from the transmitter. A second one of the subcarriers carries third information that is not TDMA encoded, the third information being associated with a third node remote from the transmitter. A receiver and system also are described.

摘要: An optical network communication system utilizes a passive optical network including an optical hub having an optical line terminal, downstream transmitter, an upstream receiver, a processor, and a multiplexer. The upstream receiver includes a plurality of TWDMA upstream subreceivers. The system includes a power splitter for dividing a coherent optical signal from the optical hub into a plurality of downstream wavelength signals, a long fiber to carry the coherent optical signal between the optical hub and the power splitter, and a plurality of serving groups. Each serving group includes a plurality of optical network units configured to (i) receive at least one downstream wavelength signal, and (ii) transmit at least one upstream wavelength signal. The system includes a plurality of short fibers to carry the downstream and upstream wavelength signals between the power splitter and the optical network units, respectively. Each upstream subreceiver receives a respective upstream wavelength signal.

摘要: An electronic-photonic integrated precision delay-control component comprises a coarse-delay switching unit that is configured to assume one of a plurality of selectable switching states and to feed, in a given one of the switching states, an optical input signal forward to at least one of a plurality of selectable optical coarse-delay paths. A controllable fine-delay unit is configured to subject the optical input signal to a selectable fine group-delay amount that is tuneable between zero and a maximum fine group-delay amount. The coarse-delay switching unit and the fine-delay unit are arranged in a series connection to control application of a respective total group-delay amount to the optical input signal on any selectable total delay path, the total group-delay amount corresponding to a sum of the respective coarse group-delay amount and of the selectable fine group-delay amount. Co-integration of electronic components allows a complete pulse train generation on one chip with low sensitivity to perturbation, low drift and low manufacturing costs. A desired delay of individual pulses of the optical input signal can be tuned on chip with particularly high precision at particularly high pulse repetition frequencies.

摘要: In an optical wireless communication, OWC, network (100), time division multiple access, TDMA, is commonly used for interference suppression among multiple network devices (D1-Dn) associated to a single coordinator, or among adjacent coordinators (C1-Cn). However, an offset of MAC cycles among two adjacent coordinators (C1-C2) may still result in interference to a network device (D1) located in the overlapping area of the coverage areas of these two adjacent coordinators (C1-Cn). This invention is directed to various methods, apparatus, systems, computer program and computer-readable media for providing a mechanism to make use of an out-of-band channel to send a signal from a network device (D1) to the two adjacent coordinators (C1-C2), for assisting the alignment of MAC cycles among the two adjacent coordinators (C1-C2), and the out-of-band channel has a line-of-sight character, and is out-of-band as compared to the OWC network (100).

摘要: A hub node may or have a capacity greater than that of associated leaf nodes. Accordingly, inexpensive leaf nodes may be deployed to receive data carrying optical signals from, and supply data carrying optical signals to, the hub node. One or more connections may couple each leaf node to the hub node, each connection including one or more segments of optical fibers, optical amplifiers, optical splitters/combiners, and optical add/drop multiplexer. Optical subcarriers may be transmitted over such connections, each carrying a data stream. The subcarriers may be generated by a combination of a laser and a modulator. As the capacity requirements of the leaf nodes change, the number of subcarriers associated with, and thus the amount of data provided to, each node, may be changed accordingly.
