A multilayer varistor comprising a varistor chip body having alternately stacked ceramic layers and internal electrode layers is provided. The ceramic layer is composed of a composite oxide containing Ti and/or Zr and Ba as a main component and Si and/or Al as a subordinate component, substantially free of Cr, and has a perovskite phase. The internal electrode layer is composed of a conductor containing a base metal such as Ni or Ni alloy as a main component. The varistor is used in an electric circuit for suppressing noise.

A novel non-linear resistance element or a varistor element is proposed which is a sintered body composed of a ternary oxide mixture comprising titanium dioxide as the base component, bismuth oxide and a third oxide component selected from the group consisting of oxides of tantalum, niobium and antimony admixed in limited proportions. The sintered body is prepared by subjecting the powder mixture obtained by admixing a solution containing tantalum, niobium or antimony with titanium dioxide and bismuth oxide to sintering following drying and calcination. The varistor element of the invention is stable in its performance and has a sufficiently high non-linearity index so that excellent noise suppressors are prepared with the varistor element to be useful in absorbing the noise voltages generated in various rotatory machines such as miniature motors.Further improvement in the above varistor element is proposed by adding a small amount of silicon dioxide to the ternary oxide mixtures.

A low temperature fired glass-ceramic system encompassing a series of temperature compensating bodies having temperature coefficients that cover a wide range and possessing dielectric constants of from 30 to 125. This system consists of a mixture of a prefired blend of baria, titania and rare earth oxides, and a low firing glass formulation wherein the mixture is fired within the temperature range of 1,800*F to 2,100*F. A slip suspension of this mixture can be used to manufacture monolithic capacitors that utilize a relatively inexpensive palladium-silver electrode.

The present invention relates to a method for manufacture of ceramic parts used for protecting semiconductor devices such as IC, LSI, etc. against anomalous high voltages such as noise, pulse, static electricity, etc. and the object of the present invention is to provide ceramic parts capable of removing or restraining high-frequency noises on signal lines by reducing the impedance of the devices.In order to attain the above object, according to the present invention, a pulse voltage of 50 kV in maximum value which requires a time of 200 nanoseconds or less for reaching the maximum value from an initial value and a time of 1 microsecond or less for returning to the initial value through the maximum value and which has an energy of 0.5 joule or lower is applied at least once between the electrodes (2).
