A force balanced brake system for effecting ratio changes in transmission comprising a band brake unit (10) having separate bands (12 and 13) selectively engageable with a reaction drum (5), each with a piston apply lug (16 and 18) and anchor lug (17 and 19). With equal area apply pistons (21 and 41 charged with common pressure, apply and reaction forces are equal and opposite. Side loads are eliminated so the brake drum (5) is only piloted as a rotating component. The system provides freewheeler type shifts without specific one-way devices. The brake band unit (10) provides engine braking during vehicle coast. For freewheeler type shifts, the system is staged in a one-way mode and the torque capacity of the band is regulated to vary in direct relationship with the torque band (10) also reduces to a near zero value allowing the brake drum (5) to turn freely in the direction opposite to previous reactive torque.

The present invention relates to an improvement in a band brake wherein a plurality of rotors and stators provide for braking a rotatable member when a friction lining on the band brake is engageable with the rotatable member. The rotatable member carries an axially extendible assembly which is engageable with the friction lining to provide for extension of the axially extendible assembly. When the assembly is extended, the rotors which rotate with the rotatable member and the stators which are carried by a support housing are moved axially into frictional engagement with each other. The extendible assembly comprises a first element carried by a key on the rotatable member to impart rotation with the rotatable member and permit axial movement relative to the rotatable member, and a second element resiliently connected to the first element. The first element and second element include a cam therebetween such that when the second element engages the friction lining of the band brake, the second element rotates through a limited angle relative to the first element to increase the axial spacing between the elements by the action of the cam. The first element is also engageable with the friction lining to eliminate noise and instability in the action between the elements and the cam. In order to engage the friction lining with the rotatable member, the support housing forms a hydraulic actuator with at least one piston and a pair of links which are pivotably connected to each other cooperate with the friction lining when the hydraulic actuator is operated to contract the friction lining into engagement with the rotatable member.

A control valve for a hydraulically actuated steering clutch and steering brake are provided. The valve comprises a valve housing having a plurality of bores therein, right and left hand operating rods and first, second and third spools slidably disposed within said respective bores. The spools are normally urged towards a neutral position where the hydraulic fluid from a hydraulic pressure supply source is discharged, through a drain circuit. The first and third spools are arranged such that when either of the right and left hand operating rods is moved on a predetermined stroke, the hydraulic fluid delivered by the supply source is supplied into either the pressure chamber of a right hand steering clutch or that of a left hand steering clutch, and when the operating rod is moved on a further predetermined stroke, the hydraulic fluid is supplied into either the pressure chamber of a right hand steering brake or that of a left hand steering brake, whereby the steering clutch and the steering brake can be controlled by a common control valve.
