    Abstract: A process for manufacturing transglycosylation products. According to the process, a starch derivative is reacted at acidic conditions with an alkanol containing 1-6 hydroxyl groups and the reaction product is recovered as such or it is subjected to further processing. According to the method, the transglycosylation reaction between the starch derivatives and the alkanol is carried out in a reactive extrusion process, whereby the reaction can essentially be performed in the absence of liquid media at high yield. The invention also relates to new transglycosylation products of starch derivative, containing anions derived from a phosphorus-containing acid, which are chemically bonded to the product.

    Abstract: A method for manufacturing a board product made up of at least two layers, and a multilayer board product. According to the method, the board webs (4, 5, 6) forming the layers are bonded together by gluing. According to the invention, at least one of the webs is treated mechanically by compression so that in the web surface there form permanent deformations projecting from the web surface, and the layers are glued together by using a starch-based adhesive, which is applied at a solids content over 45% to the layers to be bonded. The adhesive having a high solids content dries and bonds rapidly to the surfaces to be joined, even without additional heating. Since the adhesive contains little or no water, no after-bending or flattening of the middle layer occurs in the bond.

    Abstract: A starch derivative which, when incorporated with no or only a little plasticizer, yields moldings having good flexibility, toughness, and water-relating properties for practical use is an esterified, polyester-grafted starch which is formed by esterifying starch and grafting the starch with polyester. The esterification involves the introduction of one or more acyl groups consisting of saturated or unsaturated aliphatic acid groups or aromatic carboxylic acid groups having 2 to 18 carbon atoms and the polyester is one which is formed from one or more 4- to 12-membered lactones by ring-opening polymerization, with the terminal hydroxyl groups being almost completely blocked by esterification.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a new composition for sizing paper and board, containing a cationic polysaccharide esterified by a dicarboxylic acid anhydride, characterized in that the said dicarboxylic acid anhydride is substituted with a carbon chain, saturated or unsaturated, of branched structure. The anhydride may for example consist of tetrapropenylsuccinic anhydride or of any one of its isomers. The composition for sizing according to the invention may, if necessary, contain an oxidizing agent such as a persulphate. It may advantageously be applied to the surface treatment of printing and/or writing papers, in particular of papers for envelopes and of papers for impact-free printing such as inkjet printing.

    Abstract: Modified starches useful for emulsifying industrial products, especially foods and beverages containing flavor oils, are prepared by enzymatic degradation of the 1,4-alpha-D-glucosidic linkages from the non-reducing ends of a starch molecule, preferably employing beta-amylase, which may be carried out before or after the preparation of a starch derivative containing a hydrophobic group or both hydrophilic and hydrophobic substituent groups. The enzymatic degradation provides a starch emulsifier whose emulsions are characterized by improved shelf stability, which emulsifier may be used as a replacement for gum arabic and in other industrial applications.
