Abstract: This invention relates to acid catalysis of organic compound feedstock, e.g. conversion of oxygenates to hydrocarbons, over catalyst material treated in a special way for increasing the acid catalytic activity thereof. In particular, a novel catalyst activation process is followed to enhance the alpha value of high-silica zeolite catalyst by contact with an ammoniacal solution of an alkali metal aluminate under appropriate conditions of time, temperature and pH.

Abstract: Aldehydes can be converted to dienes by contacting the aldehydes with a non-zeolitic molecular sieve. Preferably the non-zeolitic molecular sieve has, in its calcined form, an adsorption of isobutane of at least about 2 percent by weight of the non-zeolitic molecular sieve at a partial pressure of 500 torr and a temperature of 20.degree. C. The non-zeolitic molecular sieves can achieve good conversion rates and selectivities for the reaction. The reaction is especially useful for the conversion of 2-methylbutyraldehyde to isoprene.

Abstract: This invention is directed to a process for the conversion of an aldehyde to a diolefin comprising contacting an aldehyde of 4 to 6 carbon atoms in the vapor phase at a temperature of 300.degree. to 400.degree. C. with a catalyst comprising boron phosphate wherein the initial molar ratio of phosphorous (P) to boron (B) (P/B) is less than 1.0 but greater than 0.6 which is in intimate admixture with from 0.1 to 10 weight percent graphite. More specifically, this invention is concerned with a process for the catalytic dehydration of 2-methylbutanal (2MBA) to isoprene in the vapor phase with a boron phosphate catalyst wherein the improvement comprises the use of a catalyst with a molar ratio of P/B of less than 1.0 but greater than 0.6 which contains from 0.1 to 10 weight percent graphite and 0 to 10 mole percent, based on moles of boron, of ammonia or an amine selected from the group consisting of mono-, di- and/or tri- alkyl amines of 1 to 10 carbon atoms.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of 2,3-dimethylbutene-2 is disclosed, which comprises the steps of converting isovaleraldehyde to isopropylacrolein, hydrogenating .alpha.-isopropylacrolein to form 2,3-dimethylbutanol, dehydrating 2,3-dimethylbutanol to form an olefin mixture comprising 2,3-dimethylbutene-1 and 2,3-dimethylbutene-2, and isomerizing the 2,3-dimethylbutene-1 contained in the mixture into 2,3-dimethylbutene-2. The present process is technically simple and inexpensive to utilize, and results in high yields of the desired product.

Abstract: The process of producing ethynyl aromatic compounds which are useful as intermediates in the preparation of 3-dimensional carbon-carbon structures for aerospace and military applications and as starting materials in the preparation of organic semi-conductors. The ethynyl aromatic compounds may be any of the classes illustrated in FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawing. Starting compounds for the process may by any compound from the classes illustrated in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6. The starting compound is reacted in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst in a suitable solvent with an acyl compound from the class illustrated in FIG. 7 to yield a compound within the classes illustrated in FIGS. 8, 9 and 10. The carbonyl groups in this compound are reduced to yield a corresponding alcohol. Each hydroxy group in the alcohol is converted to an easily eliminatable group, e.g., by reacting it with methane sulfonyl chloride, when subjected to basic conditions. The chlorine and the easily eliminatable groups are then eliminated under basic conditions to yield the desired ethynyl aromatic compound.Illustrative examples of products produced by the process of the invention include 4-4'-diethynyldiphenyl methane; 1,2-(4,4'-diethynyldiphenyl) ethane; 1,1-(4,4'-diethynyldiphenyl) ethane; tris(4-ethynyl phenyl) methane; 4-ethynyl toluene; 2,2'-(4,4'-diethynyldiphenyl) propane; and 4-ethynyl biphenyl.
