Abstract:
A plug assist tooling assembly for a roll fed, post trim thermoforming machine in which a spider plate connecting plug assist rods is located below one or more support plates holding a clamping plate having an array of holes formed therein each defining a chamber each receiving a plug assist which chambers are sealed when sheet material is clamped by rings encircling the open top of each chamber to enable air pressure communicating to each chamber to exert forming pressure on the section of sheet material within each clamping ring. The support plates are fixed spaced from one of the main platens by standoffs fixed relative to the support plate or plates and the platen, the spider plate located in the same space.
Abstract:
This invention relates to methods and apparatus for manufacturing shaped polymeric articles by substantially continuous vacuum forming. The method includes providing a sheet of hot polymeric material which is disposed onto a rotating belt having a mold impression. Vacuum pressure is applied to the polymeric material through the belt so as to draw the hot polymeric material into intimate contact with the mold impression to form a patterned sheet portion and a remaining sheet portion. This method thereafter cools at least the patterned sheet portion below a heat deflection temperature of the polymeric material, forms the remaining sheet portion, and then cools the remaining sheet portion below the heat deflection temperature so that features other than the central pattern, such as nail and butt edges, can be mechanically worked into the polymeric sheet.
Abstract:
An apparatus for forming a bathtub liner over an existing bathtub comprising a container, a seal, a heating element, and a pressure increasing element. The container defines a cavity. The seal is associated with cavity and is capable of forming a substantially continuous seal with a bathtub liner. The heating element is capable of heating the cavity, and in turn, the liner. The pressure increasing element is capable of increasing the pressure within the cavity, to in turn, force a bathtub liner outwardly, away from the cavity. Upon positioning of the liner and apparatus over an existing bathtub the pressure increasing element will force the liner toward and into contact with the surfaces of the existing bathtub.
Abstract:
A twin sheet forming system and method is used to form a hollow article, such as an automotive fuel tank, from first and second sheets of thermoplastic material. The system includes first and second loading stations, first and second heating stations, and first and second thermoforming stations in an in-line arrangement. The in-line arrangement allows the sheets to be transferred independently between the stations and the separate thermoforming stations allows the sheets to be thermoformed independently. Each of the thermoforming stations includes an upper and lower platen generally in a side by side arrangement for supporting thermoforming tools and plug assists. After heating, the sheets are independently transferred to the thermoforming stations and formed using the thermoforming tools and plug assists. The thermoforming tool and thermoformed piece in one of the thermoforming stations is then transferred to the other station, and the thermoformed pieces are fused together. The press platen in this station thus has a two stage capability for both plug assisting and fusing. In one example, the plug assist can be an insert to be secured and left within the article during the thermoforming process.
Abstract:
A resin mold has a surface layer formed on the molding surface of a main body from a thermosetting resin and containing fine particles of silicon carbide. The surface layer can be formed simply by thermosetting the resin without calling for any plating, so that the mold can be made in a short time. The high hardness of silicon carbide gives a high wear resistance to the surface layer. The main body is formed from a thermosetting resin and contains metal particles.
Abstract:
A method is provided for manufacturing a painted plastic component having a badge, emblem or other ornamentation, such as air bag covers having a badge, or wherein the component is the badge itself. The method includes providing a painted film sheet and a one-piece thermoplastic elastomeric structural carrier. A bottom contact surface of the film sheet bonds with a front contact surface of the structural carrier by diffusion between the contact surfaces thereof within a mold cavity of an injection mold separate from the mold cavity of a vacuum mold which is utilized to vacuum-mold the film sheet to form the desired painted plastic component.
Abstract:
A method for preparing a mold form includes forming a mold blank having a surface corresponding to the surface of the article desired and enclosing the mold blank in an open ended enclosure. A thin layer of polymer resin, preferably polyurea is sprayed on the surface of the mold blank and allowed to cure. Heat transfer tubing is inserted over the resin layer. A mixture of metallic pellets and epoxy are inserted over the heat transfer tubing and then another layer of resin is sprayed over the mixture. After the resin has cured, the mold blank is removed to expose the mold form having an outer surface of polyurea.
Abstract:
A formed product which has a thickness of 0.1˜2 mm and a haze of 5%/2 mm or less and is degraded with ease in the natural environment is obtained by holding a transparent L-lactic acid base polymer sheet having an L-lactic acid proportion of 75% or more and a thickness of 0.2˜2 mm under conditions where: (1) a holding temperature is in the range of 55˜90° C., (2) a holding time m1 (min) satisfies the formula: log10m1
Abstract:
The inventive method serves for producing open containers from a flat sheeting (4) consisting of a foam material or containing at least one layer of such a material, by drawing the sheeting with the help of a female (2) and a male tool (1) and by expanding the foam material with the help of a pressure reduction. The action sequence of one cycle of the inventive method is e.g. the following: positioning and clamping the sheeting (4) over the opening of the recess in the female tool (2); moving the male tool (1) into the recess and at the same time prestretching the sheeting with the help of a pressure difference between its two sides, such that the face of the male tool (1) gets in contact with the prestretched sheeting inside the recess; drawing the sheeting further by moving the male tool (1) to its end position in the recess of the female tool (2) and at the same time reducing the pressure on the female tool side or on both sides of the sheeting such that it reaches a value below ambient pressure which is sufficiently low for expanding the foam material and keeping the reduced pressure until the sheeting is cooled below plastication temperature; then equalizing the pressure and demolding and declamping the formed container and advancing the sheeting for a further method cycle.
Abstract:
A method for making a cargo liner or a floor mat using a plastic molding process wherein a male mold includes a steel rule about its perimeter or a female mold includes a groove about its perimeter creating a ridge in the molded article to allow trimming of surplus material from the article along the ridge such that the dimensions of the finished article are determined by the ridge. In a preferred embodiment, an article is molded in a thermoforming process, the article thus produced includes a channel edge which enhances the appearance of the finished article and improves its structural integrity.
