Basically, the requirements on the addition of particulate alumina (Al2O3) to the flue gas at a place where it is experiencing turbulence, and where its temperature is below 1000* F, and preferably within the range of 450* F. to 650* F.

Sulfur oxides are removed from exhaust gases by passage through a moving bed of granular, carbon-containing adsorbent. The bed of adsorbent moves downward through a perforated shaft. The direction of flow of the exhaust gas is transverse to that of the adsorbent. The flow of the gas is adjusted so that more gas passes through the upper portion of the bed than through the lower portion.

An existing riser-reactor into which reactants are injected for reaction therein through a plurality of nozzles is modified to provide the same with additional nozzles and as desired the nozzles are arranged to inject the same or different reactants to portions of the riser-reactor which are separated each from the other so that optimum reaction can take place in each portion. In one form of the apparatus a chamber is constructed around an existing riser-reactor into which at the place surrounded by the chamber there have been inserted and fixed to its wall a plurality of nozzled pipes whereby to feed reactant from the chamber through the pipes and nozzles into the riser-reactor. As desired, the pipes can extend to provide nozzles for injection into the riser-reactor at various depths or levels therein. Also, by partitioning the chamber different reactants can be injected from the overall chamber to different portions of the riserreactors. An apparatus as described can be originally constructed in toto rather than by modifying an existing riser-reactor.

A system for effecting the reconditioning of catalyst particles used in the reforming of a hydrocarbon stream which provides a vertically elongated confined chamber that will have the particles flow down between screens of perforated plates in a descending column through a carbon burn-off section and a halogenation section. A preferred design provides for an annularform column of particles with gas flows being out-to-in laterally through the column and, in addition, incorporates a drying section in the lower portion of the chamber. An overall system with a preferred design also combines means for scrubbing the flue gas stream from the burn-off section and returning it to the chamber and, in addition, combines means for continuously recycling a steam-halogen-air stream through the halogenation section.
