A pliable band or hoop that is flexible to normal handling, but cannot stretch circumferentially once it has reached the limits of its circumferential length. The band may have a structural portal to be used for filling, or it may simply be constructed of a fabric-like material that allows a fill tube to perforate its walls to allow for filling. In the latter case, the perforated wall tends to self-seal once the fill tube is withdrawn. The band may be flat or tubular in cross-section. However, unlike a balloon, the band does not require either a bottom or a top, as we found that a top and bottom are unnecessary when using a band or hoop to enclose material injected into a reamed out intervertebral space.

An implant holder is provided having first and second gripping arms, each having a proximal portion with a mating element formed thereon for selectively mating to a medical device, and a distal portion adapted to at least partially circumferentially engage and axially align with a rod-receiving member, e.g., a head, of a spinal implant. The spinal implant holder further includes an actuator mechanism coupled to the first and second gripping arms and effective to move the gripping arms between an open position, in which the gripping arms can be positioned around the rod-receiving head of a spinal implant, and a closed position, in which the gripping arms engage the rod-receiving head of the spinal implant. A rod reduction device is also provided and includes an elongate inserter tool having a proximal end and a distal end with a fastener-retaining member formed thereon and adapted to retain a fastener therein. A reduction cowl is disposed around the fastener-retaining member and is preferably biased to a proximal position with respect to the fastener-retaining member. The device further includes an external housing disposed around at least a portion of the elongated inserter tool and having a first member that is adapted to couple to the proximal end of each gripping arm on the spinal implant holder, and a second member that is movable with respect to the outer sleeve and that is effective to apply a distally-directed force to the reduction cowl to advance a spinal rod disposed between the reduction cowl and the rod-receiving head of a spinal implant engaged by the spinal implant holder.

An intervertebral disc prosthesis designed to be substituted for fibrocartilaginous discs ensures a connection between the vertebra of the vertebra column or the end of the latter. The prosthesis includes a pair of plates spaced from each other by a nucleus. The prosthesis has increased stability by providing the nucleus with a translation or rotation stop, or by inducing an angular correction between its plates contacting vertebra, or a combination of these characteristics. The stop includes parts external to the nucleus and contact surfaces perpendicular to their contact directions.

A surgical implant comprises a core region and a porous surface region extending over at least a part of said core region. The porous surface region has a predetermined pore volume fraction. A method of manufacturing a surgical implant in accordance with the invention comprises the steps of: (i) loading metallic powder having a predetermined particle size distribution around a pre-formed core in a sealable capsule; (ii) reducing pressure within said capsule to a predetermined pressure below atmospheric pressure; (iii) pressurising said capsule with a process gas to a predetermined pressure higher than the predetermined pressure of step (ii); (iv) sealing said capsule; (v) heating said pressurised sealed capsule at an elevated temperature and an elevated pressure for a predetermined time to produce an implant precursor; (vi) cooling said sealed capsule, and; (vii) heating said implant precursor for a predetermined time at an elevated temperature and a predetermined pressure below atmospheric pressure, whereby to generate porosity in said implant precursor.

The prosthetic device includes a first component having a first flange for longitudinally engaging a first vertebra during longitudinal insertion therein, and a second component having a second flange for longitudinally engaging a second vertebra during longitudinal insertion therein. One of the first and second components comprises a projection and the other of the first and second components comprises a recess, the projection and recess being adapted to engage one another. One of the projection and the recess are offset relative to the other of the projection and the recess to accommodate the spondylosed relationship between the first and second vertebrae.

Devices and methods for blocking and/or retaining a prosthetic spinal implant member in an intervertebral disc space are provided. In a first aspect of the invention the device comprises a first blocking member having an anchoring end and a blocking end. The anchoring end is anchored to a vertebra, and the blocking end is connected to a prosthetic spinal implant to keep the implant from being expelled from an intervertebral disc space. In a second embodiment the device further includes a second blocking member having an anchoring end and a blocking end. The anchoring end of the second blocking member is anchored to a vertebra, and the blocking end of the second blocking member is positioned to keep the prosthetic spinal implant from being expelled from an intervertebral disc space. Methods for anchoring a spinal implant are also provided.

The invention also comprises a method of preventing a bone screw from backing out of a bone screw hole in an intervertebral disc replacement device, comprising the steps of inserting a retaining device into a mounting hole in the intervertebral disc replacement device and tightening the retaining device in the mounting hole such that a portion of a head flange of the retaining device becomes flatter against a portion of the intervertebral disc replacement device and another portion of the head flange of the retaining device abuts against a portion of the bone screw.
