    摘要: The invention is a film-riding seal for a pump shaft that is resistant to the deposition of iron oxides such as hematite and goethite on the confronting, spaced apart, seal surfaces. The seal generally comprises a ceramic runner mounted on the pump shaft and an adjacent ceramic stationary sealing ring. The runner has a sealing surface and the stationary sealing ring has sealing surface confronting the runner sealing surface. The ceramic sealing surfaces include a catalyst selected from the group consisting of rhenium, ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, silver, osmium, iridium, platinum, gold and mixtures thereof.

    摘要: A piston ring has a diamond-like carbon film formed in a thickness of 0.5 to 30 micrometers over an under film on the upper and lower surfaces. The under film is directly formed on the surfaces, or formed on a hard surface treatment layer consisting of a gas nitrided layer or a chromium plating film. The diamond-like carbon is configured with any one of an amorphous carbon structure, an amorphous carbon structure having partly a diamond structure, or an amorphous carbon structure having partly a graphite structure. The under film is comprised of one or more elements selected from the group consisting of silicon, titanium, tungsten, chromium, molybdenum, niobium and vanadium in an atomic content of 70 percent or more and below 100 percent, and the remaining content consisting of carbon, or one or more of said elements in an atomic content of 100 percent. The films may also be formed in the same way on the outer circumferential surface of the piston ring.

    摘要: A seal arrangement for a sensing element of a gas sensor, in particular for determining the oxygen content in exhaust gases of internal combustion engines, includes a packet made up of several seal elements, packed one on top of another, which immobilize the sensing element in a longitudinal bore of a metallic probe housing. A funnel-shaped diversion element lying in the axial direction of the sensor is integrated into the seal elements packed one above another in such a way that gas permeability between the diversion element and the inner wall of the probe housing is ensured. Toward the measured-gas end of the sensor, a small gap remains open between the sensing element and the diversion element.

    摘要: A method and apparatus for reducing oil consumption and oil deterioration in a reciprocating engine. The engine is provided with ceramic rings and ceramic cylinder linings. Minimal oil lubricant is adsorbed on the surface layer of the rings and liners to form a lubricating boundary-film on the rings and linings. Excess oil lubricant is restricted from entering the piston ring/cylinder lining region to preclude the formation of a hydrodynamic, full film lubricant layer between the rings and linings. Several engine designs are disclosed.
