A method of operating a receiver in a communications system is disclosed. The receiver receives a radio-frequency (RF) data signal and converts the RF data signal to an intermediate frequency. The receiver then determines whether a blocker image interferes with the received data signal, and selectively adjusts the intermediate frequency to which the data signal is converted based on the determination. The receiver may lower the intermediate frequency if the blocker image interferes with the received data signal. The receiver may also deactivate a quadrature chain of the receiver if the blocker image interferes with the received data signal.

Improved signal reception is provided in a digital television signal received by identifying and mitigating multipath signal effects prior to demodulation and equalization. According to an exemplary embodiment, a digital television signal is received having multipath signal effects which cause a plurality of ripples in the received signal. The amplitude of at least one of the ripples and the frequency separation between at least two of the ripples are detected. At least one of an antenna and a tuner is controlled in dependence upon the detection. Signal demodulation and equalization operations may be performed after at least one of the antenna and the tuner is controlled.

During a period of transition from broadcasting analog TV signals to broadcasting digital TV signals, digital TV reception is susceptible to disruption owing to co-channel interference by analog TV signals. During this same transition period usually a digital TV receiver will incorporate an auxiliary analog TV receiver. This auxiliary analog TV receiver is advantageously used during digital TV signal reception for determining the amount of co-channel interference by analog TV signals, so that comb filtering can be selectively applied to symbol coding recovered from the digital TV signal, for suppressing artifacts of co-channel interfering analog TV signal when they are large enough to have substantial adverse on symbol decoding. The amount of NTSC co-channel interference is estimated by detecting the level of intercarrier generated by mixing the audio and video signals of the analog TV signal.

In a radio receiver for receiving vestigial sideband (VSB) signals including symbol codes descriptive of digital signals, HDTV signals being exemplary of such VSB signals, a tuner provides for selecting one of channels at different locations in a frequency band used for transmitting such VSB signals. The tuner also includes mixers for performing plural conversion of the selected channel to a final intermediate-frequency signal, which is digitized by an analog-to-digital converter. A phase tracker, operative on narrow-bandpass filtered portions of the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal centering on its carrier frequency, suppresses an imaginary portion of the final intermediate-frequency signal, arising from multipath distortion or from phase incoherency in local oscillations used during frequency conversion. A digital controlled oscillator in the phase tracker supplies digital descriptions of the carrier wave for the final intermediate-frequency signal to a synchronous detector, which synchronous detector detects the real portion of the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal in accordance with those digital descriptions of the carrier wave. The phase tracker generates the real and imaginary portions of the digitized final intermediate-frequency signal using a pair of all-pass digital filters, which exhibit a constant .pi./2 difference in phase response for the digitized bandpass signals and have finite impulse responses.
