Abstract: A comparator circuit with a speed control element is disclosed herein. The speed control element may include a variable voltage source and one or more transistors. Using a voltage supplied by the variable voltage source, the one or more transistors may control a swing of a clock signal to provide a swing controlled clock signal to an amplification portion of the comparator circuit. The swing controlled clock therefor may be used to control the speed of the comparator circuit (e.g., an amplification phase) based on a level of noise in the circuit. The swing controlled clock may further be used to align an output common voltage of the comparator circuit with switching voltages of downstream logic cells (e.g., inverters) connected to the comparator circuit.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a system and methods of controlling a system of storage devices. In particular, the present disclosure relates to methods of controlling peak power and energy consumption in storage systems due to storage devices while maintaining data availability. The system implements a method for maintaining data availability in a storage subsystem by determining a plurality of storage devices to include in a fixed set of storage devices based on a fault tolerance system. The storage devices included in the fixed set are prevented from transitioning between RPM spin modes. The method further involves controlling peak power and energy consumed by the storage subsystem which may include transitioning the storage devices not included in the fixed set from a high RPM operational mode to a low RPM operational mode to reduce peak power and energy consumption.

Abstract: A computer system that employs a solid-state memory device as a physical storage resource includes a hypervisor that is capable of supporting TRIM commands issued by virtual machines running in the computer system. When a virtual machine issues a TRIM command to its corresponding virtual storage device to invalidate data stored therein, the TRIM command is received at an interface layer in the hypervisor that translates the TRIM command to a SCSI command known as UMMAP. A SCSI virtualization layer converts the UNMAP command to a file system command to delete portions of the virtual storage device that is maintained as a file in the hypervisor's file system. Upon receiving the delete commands, the hypervisor's file system driver generates a TRIM command to invalidate the data stored in the solid-state memory device at locations corresponding to the portions of the file that are to be deleted.

Abstract: A hard disc drive (HDD) with an enlarged magnetic recording disc. In some embodiments, a base deck and top cover are arranged to provide an HDD housing with a 2½ inch form factor or a 3½ inch form factor. A magnetic recording disc is supported for rotation within the housing. A data transducer is controllably advanced across a recording surface of the magnetic recording disc to write data to the recording surface, and a printed circuit board assembly (PCBA) affixed to an external surface of the base deck incorporates control electronics to provide write signals to the data transducer during the writing of data to the recording surface. The disc has an outer diameter of at least 67 millimeters, mm for the 2½ inch form factor housing and has an outer diameter of at least 97 mm for the 3½ inch form factor housing.
