摘要:
The present invention is directed to a process for separating polyester materials from various coating materials. In general, the process includes the steps of mixing polyester materials which have coatings adhered to the surface with an alkaline composition in a mixer. The alkaline composition contains a solution of a Group I alkaline compound and a Group II alkaline compound. The mixer imparts sufficient energy to the slurry to provide substantially complete, even coating of the polyester containing materials with the alkaline composition and cause separation of the coating materials from the surface of the polyester substrate. The mixture can be dried causing the remaining coating materials to form a dry powder mixed with the polyester substrate. After drying, the coating materials can be substantially removed from the polyester substrate by one or more dry separation techniques. After being subjected to the dry separation techniques, any remaining coating materials can be removed from the polyester substrate by a standard wash or rinse technique. Through the process of the present invention, polyester can be separated and recovered from waste materials such as those containing non-aqueous based silver emulsion coatings found in digitally printed X-ray films and the silver in such films can also be recovered. Through use of dry separation techniques, many environmental concerns and disposal problems encountered due to water treatment requirements of aqueous separation techniques can be alleviated.

Coating is removed from polyester film which is formed into flakes by use of an alkali stripping solution containing surfactant wherein the surfactant is not optimized in a stripping step to remove redeposited coating but rather is optimized to aid in rinsing based on residual surfactant present on the stripped flake.

A process is described for recovering cellulose triacetate from scrap photographic film, using aqueous solutions free of organic solvents, by the steps of:a) reducing the film to segments of handlable size;b) oxidizing the film with an oxidizing agent comprising an alkali metal permanganate and a strong acid;c) oxidizing the product of step b) with an alkali metal hypochlorite to remove stain from iron compound and yellow dye;d) bleaching the product of step c) with an alkali metal metabisulfite in an acidic environment; ande) recovering cellulose triacetate. The recovered cellulose triacetate prepared in accordance with this invention has essentially the same spectral absorption at 400 nm as virgin cellulose triacetate and can be used to prepare photographic film base of acceptable color purity.

A process for recovering a support from a photographic film is disclosed. The photographic film comprises the support and an undercoating layer provided thereon. The support is made of cellulose triacetate film base. The undercoating layer contains gelatin and cellulose nitrate. According to the present invention, the process comprises the steps of: (I) treating the photographic film with an aqueous solution of a surfactant; and then (II) treating the photographic film with an aqueous solution of a protease to remove the undercoating layer from the support. The aqueous solution of the protease used at the step of (II) preferably further contains an anionic surfactant. It is also preferred that the process further contains the step of (III) treating the recovered support with an aqueous solution of hydrogen peroxide to bleach the support.

Microfiches to be destroyed by heat treatment are placed within a disposable tube fitted with a sealing plug, then baked to a sufficient temperature to cause melting and discarded. The apparatus comprises an electric heating resistor and a tubular heating jacket for receiving the disposable tube, the sealing plug being forcibly engaged in the tube by means of a cap which is screwed down by hand. All negative sheets and documents having a photosensitive surface such as microfiches are destroyed economically without any contaminating waste products.

This invention provides a method and apparatus for treating photographic film to recover silver and the plastic base layer for re-use. A wash tank containing warm water at about neutral pH contains at least one enzyme from the following group: protease, amylase, lipase. The water in the wash tank is agitated and the enzymes attack the adhesive and organic layers on the plastic base, in order to loosen and remove these materials. The film is then placed in a rinse tank containing either a weak aqueous glycol solution or a weak caustic solution which is agitated. Finally the film is removed from the rinse tank and dried. Liquid is removed from the wash tank and treated to remove silver therefrom.

摘要:
A procedure for separating and recovering clean polyester separately from the materials with which it is coated and for recovering desired values present in the coating materials, whereby the recovered polyester and other valuable recovered materials may be recycled thereby avoiding, or minimizing pollution from such materials. When the starting material is a polyester photographic film, the treatment includes detaching the contaminants from the polyester film base by contacting the polyester photographic film scrap with an aqueous solution of monoethanolamine containing 2% to 15% by weight of water and having a temperature between 100*C and 170*C, for a time sufficient to remove both the coating and the subcoating from said base.
