An apparatus for transferring effluent from photograph development systems, especially highly automated, high-volume developer systems. A silver-recovery system discharges an iron-rich solution into a tank. Developer fluid and fixer solution is mixed with the iron-rich solution in the tank to buffer its pH. A float in the tank activates a switch located outside the tank to actuate a pump for evacuating the mixed effluent from the tank for disposal. Water may be mixed under pressure with the pumped effluent to reduce clogging in effluent drainage lines due to precipitate and other and build-ups from effluent.

The present invention relates to a material and a method for treating of photographic effluents in order to eliminate microorganisms and pollutant by-products so as to control bacterial growth and thereby obtain effluents that comply with regulatory requirements. The method for preparing an oxidizing material according to the invention comprises the dispersion in colloidal form of a metal or metal compound in an aqueous solution of an inorganic aluminosilicate polymer, said aluminosilicate being able to form an inorganic gel, and said metal or metal compound being able to cause the oxidation of oxidizable products and (or) micro-organisms to be eliminated, followed by the addition of a base to cause said aluminosilicate to gel. The metal is preferably silver in a powder form that is able to form a colloid when it is dispersed. The oxidizing material of the invention is efficient especially for the treatment of photographic baths, in particular wash baths placed after the fixing step.

The present invention relates to a processing system and method for processing photographic material. The processing system and method of the invention is adapted to recover water from humid air for reuse in the processor, as well as convert a liquid waste processing solution into a dry waste for disposal. In the system and method of the present invention, heated air is circulated through the processor and comes into contact with a cold surface to condense the heated air. The water resulting from this contacting of the heated air with the cold surface can be collected and recycled back to the processor for reuse in the processor. Further, waste solution can be absorbed by a matting material appropriately placed in the processor which evaporates the waste solution to a solid waste for subsequent disposal.

The element is comprised of a transparent film support and hydrophilic colloid layers coated on opposite sides of the film support. An infrared opacifying dye is contained within the element capable of reducing specular transmission through the element before, during and after processing to less than 50 percent, measured at a wavelength within the spectral region of from 850 to 1100 nm. A processing solution soluble colorant can be contained in one or more of the hydrophilic colloid layers.

Silver is recovered from an exhausted photographic fix or bleach-fix solution by bringing together just at the entrance of a static mixer a stream of a sodium sulfide solution and a stream of fix or bleach-fix solution, and passing the mixture at high velocity through the static mixer, wherein it is repeatedly divided and changed in flow pattern, to precipitate silver sulfide particles. The flowing mixture containing silver sulfide particles is then passed into a separation chamber of enlarged cross section, and its flow is slowed and reversed by baffles to cause the silver sulfide particles to drop out and collect in the bottom. A fix solution is regenerated for reuse by the above procedure. When a bleach-fix is treated, it can be regenerated by introducing air, either upstream or downstream of the separation chamber, to reoxidize to ferric ions any ferrous ions present as a result of the bleaching operation, or those ferrous ions produced by reaction of sodium sulfate with residual ferric ions in the exhausted bleach-fix. A small amount of acid also should be added to adjust the pH to below 7.
