An infrared source which provides a miniature, highly stable and efficient source of infrared energy for use with infrared detectors and the like. The infrared source of the invention incorporates a platinum resistance temperature detector (RTD) which is integrated with the heater element to provide a means of electronic servo control of the heater temperature. The heater element and the RTD are tightly coupled thermally to provide accurate, continuous tracking and control of the heater temperature. The infrared source design provides excellent infrared energy output with less than one watt input power to the heater.

The illumination system as a part of an optical inspection system, the total inspection system itself, and the method of illuminating and inspecting a workpiece. The illumination system is computer controlled as to a level of intensity and adjustable as to angle of incidence. The illumination system includes illumination control electronics, a quad quartz halogen lamp array light source, a fiber optic line converter and an illumination collection system, having a collimator lens array and a focusing/field coverage lens. As a result of the present invention, determinations of false defects on the PCB are minimized. Human contact with the PCB is also minimized and the rate of inspections performable is increased.

A lighting control system for maintaining the light source and measuring components of a color measurement station in a stabilized condition. A high frequency fluorescent lamp drive is controlled by a ballast which is adjusted by a control signal generated by using a video camera to simultaneously view a standard tile and a test sample. One of the color signals in the standard tile portion of the signal is compared with prescribed information stored in a computer, and if the standard tile signal differs from the prescribed information, the microcomputer adjusts the fluorescent lamp drive until the signal from the standard tile reaches the prescribed level, at which time the color signals from the test sample are evaluated while the lamp intensity and camera response are generating standardized measurement conditions.

A colorimeter provides compensation for changes in the color signature of an object due to lamp aging. A current measuring circuit measures current to the lamp during an initial training of the colorimeter and stores a value I.sub.T indicative of the lamp current at training. When an object is scanned by the colorimeter, lamp current is again sensed and assigned a value I.sub.S. Comparison between a sensed color signature and a stored color signature then occurs. Compensation is accomplished by modifying one of the two signatures by a ratio including I.sub.S and I.sub.T.

A device for determining the composition of a mixture of fluids by spectral absorption, comprises: a radiation source; a detector for detecting radiation that has been attenuated by the mixture; and a device for separating the radiation into a wavelength band corresponding to an absorption band of one of the fluids, a wavelength band corresponding to an absorption band of another of the fluids, and at least one reference wavelength band substantially adjacent to each of the absorption bands, and especially adjacent to each side of the absorption band or group of absorption bands. The device may be used to determine the composition of mixtures of oil, water and gaseous hydrocarbons in oil wells where there is a very large degree of time varying scattering e.g. Rayleigh and Mie scattering due to turbulence.
