Abstract: A vehicle propulsion system includes an engine and a first electric machine each configured to selectively provide torque to propel the vehicle. The propulsion system also includes a second electric machine coupled to the engine and configured to start the engine from an inactive state. A controller is programmed to execute a first control algorithm while output speed of the second electric machine is less than a first speed threshold. The controller is also programmed to execute a second control algorithm while output speed of the second electric machine is greater than the first speed threshold and less than a second speed threshold.

Abstract: An auxiliary machine-driving device has a first idler roller having an outer peripheral surface biased into contact with the outer peripheral surfaces of a motor/generator roller and an engine roller, a second idler roller having an outer peripheral surface biased into contact with the outer peripheral surfaces of the engine roller and a rotating roller, and a third idler roller having an outer peripheral surface biased into contact with the outer peripheral surfaces of the rotating roller and the motor/generator roller. When the engine starts, the engine is started by transmitting the driving force of the motor/generator to the engine via the motor/generator roller, the first idler roller and the engine roller. After the engine starts, power is generated from the driving force of the engine being transmitted to the motor/generator via the engine roller, the second idler roller, the rotating roller, the third idler roller and the motor/generator roller.

Abstract: A control device for a vehicle includes an electronic control unit which executes electric assist of rotation of an engine crankshaft by a motor in association with engagement of a clutch, at the time of an ignition start in which fuel injection and sparking are executed with respect to a target cylinder, which has been stopped in an expansion stroke. The electronic control unit corrects at least one of the initiation timing of sparking which is to be initially performed in the target cylinder at the time of the ignition start and an electric assist torque which is to be used for the ignition start, on the basis of a combination of the relationship between an acquisition value and an estimation value of a torque indication value, and the relationship between an acquisition value and an estimation value of an ignition delay time.

Abstract: A starting control device for an engine includes an ECU configured to: i) execute an autonomous starting control in which the ECU injects fuel into the cylinder from a fuel injection valve after a crank shaft rotates reversely before the crank shaft stops its rotation and then ignites an air-fuel mixture using an ignition plug to start the engine without using a starter motor; ii) determine whether a pressure in the cylinder increasing due to the reverse rotation is equal to or greater than a predetermined pressure at a time point of firing of the air-fuel mixture by the ignition; and iii) prohibit starting of the engine under the autonomous starting control when the ECU determines that the pressure in the cylinder is not equal to or greater than the predetermined pressure.

Abstract: A starter controller incorporated in a starter control system for controlling actuation of a first starter and a second starter to start an engine. The second starter is an alternating-current (AC) starter. The starter control system actuates the first starter in response to an engine start-up request, deactivates the first starter before completion of engine start-up, and activates the second starter while the second starter is being rotated by rotation of an engine rotary shaft. In the starter controller, a determination unit is configured to, under a condition where the engine rotary shaft is rotating after deactivation of the first starter, determine whether or not recognition of rotation of the second starter is complete. A fail-safe unit is configured to, if the recognition of rotation of the second starter is complete, perform predefined fail-safe processing responding to an abnormality in the second starter.

Abstract: When a start condition is satisfied after the internal combustion engine has been stopped according to an automatic stop control, a control apparatus reversely rotates the engine to compress an air in an expansion stroke cylinder at that time point, and thereafter generates a first time combustion. The apparatus determines whether the start condition becomes satisfied based on a first start request owing to a driving operation by a driver of a vehicle on which the engine is mounted. When the start condition becomes satisfied based on the first start request, the control apparatus makes a maximum value of an engine generating torque by the first time combustion and/or a maximum torque of the engine generating torque by a second time combustion larger as compared to when the start condition becomes satisfied based on a second start request other than the first start request.

Abstract: A vehicle includes an engine and an electric machine coupled to a transmission element. The electric machine is also selectively coupled with the engine by a clutch. The vehicle includes a belt integrated starter-generator (BISG) operatively coupled to the engine. An electronic controller includes one or more inputs adapted to receive a temperature measurement and a request to start the engine. The electronic controller is programmed to, in response to the one or more inputs receiving the request to start the engine and the temperature measurement less than a threshold temperature measurement, effect actuation of the electric machine and close the clutch to apply a first torque to the engine. The electronic controller is further programmed to, in response to an engine speed achieving an engine speed threshold, effect actuation of the BISG to apply a second torque to the engine.

Abstract: A vehicle includes a starter motor, an engine having an output mechanically coupled to the starter motor, a transmission having an input, and an electric machine mechanically coupled to the transmission input. The vehicle further includes a clutch configured to mechanically couple the electric machine and the output of the engine, and at least one controller. The at least one controller is programmed to initiate an engine start based on driver demand. The controller is further configured to enable pressure to the clutch for the engine start if driver demand is less than a calibratable torque value or enable the starter motor for the engine start if the driver demand is greater than a calibratable torque value. The controller may lock the clutch to the output of the engine in response to the speed of the engine being approximately equal to the speed of the electric machine.
