The present invention provides an improved process for recovering CO from a catalytic fast pyrolysis (CFP) process product effluent. The process comprises the steps of: a) providing a first vapor phase stream resulting from a CFP process comprising, on a water-free and solids-free basis, from 25 to 80% CO and at least 15% CO2, b) mixing the first vapor phase stream of step a) with a particular solvent to make a mixed phase stream, c) separating the mixed phase stream of step b) into a second vapor phase stream comprising CO and a liquid phase stream, and d) recovering a product stream from the second vapor phase stream of step c) having a higher concentration of CO and a lower concentration of CO2 than the first vapor phase stream of step a).

Methods are provided for converting lignin-containing biomass into compounds that are more readily processed to form fuel and/or chemical products. The methods can allow for removal of at least a portion of the oxygen in lignin, either during or after depolymerization of lignin to single ring aromatic compounds, while optionally reducing or minimizing aromatic saturation performed on the aromatic compounds. The methods can include use of quench solvent to control reactions within the product stream from a pyrolysis process and/or use of a solvent to assist with hydroprocessing of lignin, lignin-containing biomass, or a pyrolysis oil.

An ash filter and reboiler (ash filter/reboiler) includes an inlet tube heat exchanger including an outer column (column) having a vapor inlet tube through an inlet of the column coupled therein to receive fuel vapors including entrained ash particles and to direct the fuel vapors including the entrained ash particles out from a bottom of the vapor inlet tube toward a bottom portion of the column. A cooler over the bottom portion of the column for condensing the fuel vapors including the entrained ash particles to liquid fuel. A pump coupled to an outlet in a bottom of the column is for pumping out an ash particle laden portion of the liquid fuel. A heater is above the cooler for vaporizing the liquid fuel into reboiled vapor, and a vapor outlet is at a top of the column for releasing the reboiled vapors out from the column.

Steam generating gasification reactors for providing high-pressure and high-temperature steam for catalytic gasification of a carbonaceous feedstock can be based on oxygen blown gasification reactors adapted for processing a slurry feedstock comprising at least 40% water. The exhaust from the slurry gasifier comprises at least steam, carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The slurry composition and the oxygen to fuel ratio can be varied to control the ratio of carbonaceous gases in the generator exhaust. By directing substantially all of exhaust gases produced from the slurry gasification reactor through the catalytic gasifier and subsequent gas separation and sequestration processes, a greatly higher energy efficiency and decreased carbon footprint can be realized. The subsequent gas separation process produces a syngas stream which is recycled and directed into the slurry gasifier.
