Abstract: Provided are a thermoplastic polymer and a method of forming a thermoplastic polymer. The thermoplastic polymer includes a thermoplastic polymer including one or more fatty acids derived from a plant-based oil. In some embodiments, the thermoplastic polymer includes a structure according to the formula (C18HxO2)y, wherein each x is individually selected from the group consisting of 32 and 33, and wherein y is between 1 and 300. The method of forming a thermoplastic polymer including epoxidizing a plant-based oil to form an epoxidized plant-based oil; saponifying the epoxidized plant-based oil to separate the fatty acids from the glycerol; and then polymerizing the separated fatty acids to form the thermoplastic polymer.

Abstract: Low VOC, unsaturated alkyd resins are obtained by reacting (A) to (E): (A) optionally from 0 to 30% w/w naturally occurring Rosin, comprising from 40 to 80 w/w parts per hundred of Rosin of an unsaturated mono carboxylic acid with at least one C15-25cyclohydrocarbo moiety capable of a Diels Alder or Ene reaction (preferred monoacids being abietic acid, palustric acid, levopimaric acid, sandaracopimaric acid, and/or anhydrides thereof); (B) from 25 to 80% w/w of a linear C12-60hydrocarbo carboxylic acid with at least one (preferably at least two conjugated) C═C bonds (=unsaturated fatty acid); (C) optionally from 1 to 30% w/w of an ethylenically unsaturated C5-6hydrocarbo dicarboxylic acid and/or anhydride thereof, being reactive as a dienophile and/or enophile with A and/or B (preferred for C are itaconic acid, citraconic acid and/or anhydrides thereof); (D) from 1 to 40% w/w of at least one polyol; (E) optionally at least one monomer other than A to D—the total of A to E being 100%. There is a further optional step (II) where more or new (C) may be blended with the alkyd resin; the amount of C in blend being from 1 to 30 parts w/w of 100 parts of monomers (A) to (E)—and where (C) is at least used as a monomer and/or as a diluent in the blend and where alkyd resin (i) has acid value of =1200 g/mol (iii) oil length =50%.

Abstract: Sustainable lubricant compositions made from recycled thermoplastic polyesters and other reclaimed or biorenewable reactants and a method of formulating them are disclosed. The lubricant compositions comprise a polyester base oil, which incorporates recurring units from a digested thermoplastic polyester, a low-molecular-weight polyol, and C8-C24 fatty acid. The base oil has a number-average molecular weight within the range of 300 to 5000 g/mol, a hydroxyl value less than 50 mg KOH/g, and a viscosity at 40° C. less than 5000 cSt. Some of the lubricant compositions comprise the polyester base oil and one or more additives including anti-wear agents, corrosion inhibitors, antioxidants, thickeners, detergents, and the like. The lubricants have properties that rival those of commercial products made from nonrenewable hydrocarbon blends or polyol esters and are useful for many practical applications such as internal combustion engine oils, gear lubrication oils, hydraulic oils, compressor oils, metal working fluids, and lubricating greases.
