A high-temperature solution process for polymerizing ethylene is disclosed. The polymerization is performed in the presence of a preassembled bimetallic Ziegler-Natta catalyst and an aluminum compound. Molecular modeling calculations predict that the bimetallic Ziegler-Natta catalyst will have good activity and improved stability versus traditional Ziegler-Natta catalysts. This makes the catalyst especially suitable for solution polymerization processes, which require a thermally robust catalyst.

The present invention relates to a catalyst for polymerization and co-polymerization of ethylene. More particularly, the present invention relates to a solid titanium catalyst containing magnesium, wherein said catalyst is produced by preparing a magnesium solution by contact-reacting a halogenated magnesium compound with alcohol; reacting said solution with an ester compound having at least one hydroxy group, or a phosphorous compound and a silicon compound having alkoxy groups; producing a solid component with an adjusted particle morphology by adding a mixture of a titanium compound and a silicon compound; reacting the same with an aluminum compound; and then reacting the same with a titanium compound, or a titanium compound and a vanadium compound. As a result, the catalyst of the present invention has high catalytic activity with excellent catalyst morphology.

Improved olefin polymerization catalyst made by mixing a titanium tetra halide, a zirconium tetra halide, a titanium tetra ester, a chromium oxyhalide or a mixture thereof with a vanadium oxyhalide or a vanadium tetra halide; reducing such admixture with a dialkylaluminum halide, wherein at least one of the mixture components and/or reductant has a fluorine substituent; and reacting the reduction product with an aluminum trialkyl, and alkyl aluminum halide and/or a dialkyl aluminum halide. In a preferred embodiment, the reaction product is heated to above about 20* C, preferably about 20* to 200* C, to even further improve the catalytic activity thereof.

Mono- and multi-layer films comprising a polyethylene composition which comprises the reaction product of ethylene and optionally one or more alpha olefin comonomers in the presence of a catalyst composition comprising a multi-metallic procatalyst via a solution polymerization process in at least one reactor; wherein said polyethylene composition is characterized by one or more of the following properties: a melt index, I2, measured according to ASTM D 1238 (2.16 kg@190° C.), from 0.1 to 5 g/10 min; density, measured according to ASTM D-792, from 0.910 to 0.935 g/cc; melt flow ratio, I10/I2, wherein I10 is measured according to ASTM D1238 (10 kg@190° C.), from 6 to 7.4; and molecular weight distribution, (Mw/Mn) from 2.5 to 3.5 are provided. Also provided are articles made from the mono- and/or multi-layer films.
