An outside oxide glass cladding comprises fused silica. The core has an absorption band in the 1000 nm region, pumping to which region provides an increased efficiency of power conversion of pump light into luminescence light in the 1000-1700 nm range.
摘要:
An optical fiber, which has a zero-material dispersion wavelength equal to or greater than 2 μm, and a high nonlinear susceptibility χ3 equal to or greater than 1×10−12 esu, and uses tellurite glass having sufficient thermal stability for processing into a low loss fiber, employs a PCF structure or HF structure having strong confinement into a core region. This enables light to propagate at a low loss. The size and geometry of air holes formed in the core region, and the spacing between adjacent air holes make it possible to control the zero dispersion wavelength within an optical telecommunication window (1.2-1.7 μm), and to achieve large nonlinearity with a nonlinear coefficient γ equal to or greater than 500 W−1 km−1.

The present invention relates to amorphous thin films and methods of manufacturing the same. These amorphous thin films contain zirconium oxide (ZrO2), preferably at a concentration of at least 30 mol %, and other metal oxides and have surprisingly good mechanical and optical properties. In some embodiments of the present invention, the thin films may be further processed to obtain fluorinated glasses containing the same metal elements as the metal oxides.

A photonic band gap fiber and method of making thereof is provided. The fiber is made of a germanate glass comprising at least 30 mol % of a germanium oxide and has a longitudinal central opening, a microstructured region having a plurality of longitudinal surrounding openings, and a jacket. The air fill fraction of the microstructured region is at least about 90%. The fiber may be made by drawing a preform into a fiber, while applying gas pressure to the microstructured region. The air fill fraction of the microstructured region is changed during the drawing.

To provide a process for producing an air cladding type optical fiber by a method other than extrusion molding.A process for producing an optical fiber comprising a hollow glass fiber with an optical transmission glass held to extend in its axial direction at its center, which process comprises a step of heating and drawing a glass rod having three or more holes with an equal diameter provided around its center axis to extend in its axial direction where the distance between each hole and the axis is mutually equal and the distance between adjacent holes is mutually equal, and a portion surrounded by such holes will constitute said optical transmission glass, while applying pressure to expand the holes with one end of the rod closed, to form a preform wherein glass between the holes is in a plate form, and subjecting the preform to wire drawing to form an optical fiber in which said optical transmission glass is held by plate glass.

A method of molding low-temperature glass into a preform for formation by drawing into glass fiber, especially for transmission of mid-IR, involves casting a cladding glass into a mold cavity in the shape of the desired preform to form a cladding layer, and forming a glass core within the cladding layer, wherein the molten cladding glass is drained from the bottom of the mold cavity, forming an annular coating of cladding glass as an annular layer, and the core glass is quickly added within the annular cladding layer to form the glass core with the cladding layer thereabout.

A germanate glass composition suitable for use in a fiber amplifier for broadband amplification of optical signals is provided. The glass preferably includes 35-75% GeO2, 0-45% PbO, 5-20% BaO, 5-20% ZnO, and 2-10% R2O (R=Na, Li, K). It is doped with thulium ions (Tm3+) and codoped with holmium ions (Ho3+). The glass composition of the invention results in a remarkably large bandwidth as compared with previous glasses. It is also highly compatible with existing silica optical fibers.

An optical fiber that includes a core containing a first concentration of germanium, an inner cladding arranged on the core, the inner cladding containing a second concentration of germanium and having a first diffusion coefficient, and an outer cladding arranged on the inner cladding, the outer cladding having a second diffusion coefficient, where the first diffusion coefficient is larger than the second diffusion coefficient, and where the first concentration of germanium is about 200% or more of the second concentration of germanium. An optical fiber constructed in this manner can be spliced with an optical fiber having a different MFD, such as a single-mode optical fiber or an erbium-doped optical fiber, with low splice loss and a sufficient splicing strength.
