Abstract: The present invention relates generally to glass compositions incorporating rare earth oxides (RE2O3). In one embodiment, a glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprises 51-70 wt. % SiO2, 12.5-22 wt. % Al2O3, 0-20 wt. % CaO, 0-11 wt. % MgO, 0.2-1 wt. % Fe2O3, 0.05 or greater wt. % RE2O3, and greater than 1 wt. % MnOx. In another embodiment, a glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprises 51-70 wt. % SiO2, 12.5-22 wt. % Al2O3, 0-20 wt. % CaO, 0-11 wt. % MgO, 0.2-1 wt. % Fe2O3, 0.05 or greater wt. % RE2O3, 0-4 wt. % BaO, 0-4 wt. % SrO, and 0-5.5 wt. % ZnO, wherein the sum of BaO+SrO+ZnO is greater than about 2 wt. %. In another embodiment, a glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprises 51-70 wt. % SiO2, 12.5-22 wt. % Al2O3, 0-20 wt. % CaO, 0-11 wt. % MgO, 0.2-1 wt. % Fe2O3, 0.05 or greater wt. % RE2O3, and from greater than 0 to 2.5 wt. % Cu2O. In another embodiment, a glass composition suitable for fiber forming comprises 51-70 wt. % SiO2, 12.5-22 wt. % Al2O3, 0-20 wt. % CaO, 0-12.5 wt. % MgO, 0.2-1 wt. % Fe2O3, 0.05 or greater wt. % RE2O3, and at least one additional feature selected from the group consisting of: La2O3 is present in an amount greater than about 2 weight percent, CaO is present in an amount less than about 2 weight percent, a MgO/CaO ratio less than about 1, and a SiO2/Al2O3 ratio greater than about 4. The glass compositions can be used to form glass fibers which can be incorporated into a variety of other fiber glass products (e.g., strands, rovings, fabrics, etc.) and incorporated into various composites.

Abstract: A glass fiber according to the present invention is suitable for preventing filament breakage and suitable for being stably produced for a long term, and has a ß-OH value of 0.02 mm−1 or more and less than 0.55 mm−1. The preferred content of SO3 is more than 0 ppm and 70 ppm or less on a mass basis. The glass fiber is preferably substantially free of As and Sb. SO3 can be supplied to a glass raw material as, for example, a sulfuric acid salt of an alkali metal or an alkaline-earth metal.

Abstract: Provided are a surface-treated glass cloth capable of enhancing insulation reliability when used to prepare a prepreg, a prepreg and a printed wiring board using the surface-treated glass cloth. The surface-treated glass cloth includes a surface treatment layer on a surface, a glass constituting the glass cloth has a composition containing 52.0 to 60.0 mass % of SiO2, 15.0 to 26.0 mass % of B2O3, 9.0 to 18.0 mass % of Al2O3, 1.0 to 8.0 mass % of MgO, 1.0 to 10.0 mass % of CaO, 0 to 6.0 mass % of SrO, 0 to 6.0 mass % of TiO2, and 0.1 to 3.0 mass % in total of F2 and Cl2, based on the total amount of the glass, the glass cloth has a surface coverage of 75.0 to 100.0% and a thickness of 8 to 95 μm, and the surface treatment layer contains a silane coupling agent having a methacrylic group and contains no surfactant.

The glass composition may include SiO2 from about 59 to about 63 weight percent, Al2O3 from about 13.7 to about 16 weight percent, CaO from about 14 to about 16.5 weight percent, MgO from about 6 to about 8.5 weight percent, Fe2O3 less than 1 weight percent, and TiO2 less than 1 weight percent. In some cases, the composition may be substantially free of Li2O. In some cases, the composition may include Li2O up to 0.5 weight percent. In some cases, RE2O3 may be present in the composition in an amount up to 1.5 weight percent. The glass compositions can be used to form glass fibers which can be incorporated into a variety of other fiber glass products (e.g., strands, rovings, fabrics, etc.) and incorporated into various composites.

Abstract: A glass composition is provided that includes about 55.0 to 60.4% by weight SiO2, about 19.0 to 25.0% by weight Al2O3, about 8.0 to 15.0% by weight MgO, about 7 to 12.0% by weight CaO, less than 0.5% by weight Li2O, 0.0 to about 1.0% by weight Na2O, and 0 to about 1.5% by weight TiO2. The glass composition has a fiberizing temperature of no greater than about 2,500° F. Glass fibers formed from the inventive composition may be used in applications that require high stiffness, and low weight. Such applications include woven fabrics for use in forming wind blades and aerospace structures.
