Abstract: A method for operating a steering assist system of a motor vehicle, in which during a steering movement of the driver while driving the vehicle a steering assistance is determined. The steering assistance provided by an electro-hydraulic or electro-mechanical drive and may depend on the vehicle speed. The steering assistance providing a supportive force or a supporting moment to the steering system, wherein the provision of the steering assistance depends on the result of a judgment of whether there is a discrepancy between the determined steering assistance and the driver's steering intention based on a steering movement of the driver and a current value at least one steering parameter. A discrepancy exists between the steering assistance and the driver's intention to drive when a current value of a steering parameter exceeds a predetermined limit value. The steering parameters including a deviation between a steering assist torque and the driver steering torque exceeding a predetermined limit or the steering angle exceeding a predetermined limit. In such cases, the steering assistance is adjusted or prevented.

Abstract: A method is provided for steering a vehicle, wherein the forces for steering the wheels are generated by a steering torque, and wherein the steering torque is applied by a mechanical steering system and/or a steering actuator. The method includes the following steps: automatic phase: automatic steering of the vehicle in that a control unit calculates an automatic torque and actuates the steering actuator to apply the automatic torque, so that the steering torque corresponds to the automatic torque, wherein a driver intervention during the automatic phase and a manual torque applied to the steering wheel by the driver are detected, engagement phase: maintaining the calculated automatic torque as a steering torque by ignoring or compensating the manual torque until the manual torque has exceeded a defined threshold torque, wherein the threshold torque is greater than zero, and transfer phase: reducing the automatic torque after the threshold torque has been exceeded, wherein the steering torque corresponds to the sum of the manual torque and automatic torque.

Abstract: A backing system for a vehicle-trailer unit includes an input device for providing a input used to determine a first and second requested hitch angle. The first hitch angle is disposed within a standard range of motion of the input device while the second hitch angle is disposed within a maximum range of motion, different from the standard range of motion. Movement of the input device in the standard range of motion limits the requested hitch angle to a first maximum value to prevent jack-knifing of the vehicle-trailer unit. However, movement of the input device in the maximum range of motion does not limit the actual hitch angle.
