The nanograting sensor device includes a light transmissive optical component comprising a plasmonic thin film with nanostructure patterns. The nanostructure has a smooth shape profile which can enhance the efficiency of plasmonic coupling and light transmission and increase the sensing ability. Methods of the present invention provide a means of fabricating such plasmonic thin film structures. The sensor described in the present invention utilizes the changes of the plasmonic resonances to detect analytes and/or determine the concentration of analytes at the plasmonic thin film surface or in the fluid near the plasmonic thin film surface.

Process and apparatus for joining endless polymer materials by means of the transillumination technique. According to the invention, in order to be joined, the endless materials are guided through two contrarotating rollers that press against each other. The first roller consists of a material that is transparent to laser beams and is tubular. The second roller is formed from a material that can be deformed easily at the surface, so that its surface can adapt to the shape of the first roller. Devices for producing a laser beam at the contact surface between the materials to be joined are arranged in the first roller. In this case, the beam is formed as a linear laser beam longitudinally with respect to the direction of movement of the materials so that during the passage, continuous heating of the material up to the melting point is achieved, without an excessively high laser output having to be provided. By means of the process and the apparatus, continuous joining is possible at high speed.

A method for producing a mold for transferring a fine pattern includes: a step of coating a surface of a base member with a solution containing a block copolymer and polyalkylene oxide; a solvent phase-separation step of phase-separating the block copolymer under a presence of vapor of an organic solvent so as to obtain a block copolymer film of the block copolymer, the block copolymer film having a concave-convex structure on a surface thereof and a horizontal cylinder structure in an interior thereof; a step of stacking a metal layer by electroforming; and a step of releasing the base member having the concave-convex structure formed thereon from the metal layer.
