Abstract: A method of detecting and compensating for a non-operational mold cavity in an injection molding apparatus having a plurality of mold cavities and an injection molding screw or ram includes injecting, via the injection molding screw or ram, a molten thermoplastic material into the plurality of mold cavities. The method includes measuring a first process parameter of the injection molding apparatus at a pre-determined time during or after the injecting. The method also includes determining, based on the first process parameter, whether one or more mold cavities of the plurality of mold cavities are non-operational. Then, when it is determined that one or more mold cavities are non-operational, the method includes automatically adjusting the first process parameter or a second process parameter of the injection molding apparatus.

The degree of opening of the control element is taken into consideration in the calculation of the hydraulic resistance and/or the change in resistance.

In order to enable the conveying of feed materials with different properties in the simplest possible way, it is provided that at least one media feed channel opens into the screw shaft, which is designed to feed at least one additional medium to the feed material, wherein at least one mixing device is arranged in the region of the screw conveyor and/or downstream of the screw conveyor, which is designed to mix the feed material and the additional medium.-

Abstract: Disclosed herein are methods and systems for determining mold designs, polymer formulations, and processing parameters for forming a thermoplastic foam with desired cellular structure and mechanical and physical properties. In one example, the system includes a plaque mold and a plurality of interchangeable mold cavities including one pair of mold cavities used to form a solid polymer sample and two or more pairs of mold cavities for forming thermoplastic foam samples. The mold cavities include a plurality of sensors to determine pressures and temperature at various locations within the mold cavities. Samples are compared and determinations are made based on the comparison and evaluation of data regarding mold designs, formulations, and/or processing parameters. Optionally, the methods and system disclosed herein can use a venting system and collection system to collect any outcoming gases to determine the solubility of specific polymer-gas combinations to further determine mold designs, formulations, and/or processing parameters.
