A process for preweakening the inside of an automotive trim piece cover layer of various constructions by use of a laser beam so as to enable formation of an air bag deployment opening in the trim piece formed at the time the air bag deploys. The laser beam impinges the inside surface of the cover to form a groove scoring or spaced perforations to form a preweakening pattern. A robot arm may be used to move a laser generator so as to form the preweakening pattern. The laser beam can be controlled in accordance with sensed conditions to achieve accurate preweakening, and may also be used to trim substrate panels and to perform other cutting operations.
Abstract:
A method for the introduction of at least one locally limited weakening into a decorative composite, in particular for use in an automotive vehicle, by way of a plurality of laser beams, is disclosed. The decorative composite includes at least one decorative substrate, at least one decorative material and at least one upholstered layer arranged between the decorative substrate and the decorative material. The weakening is formed after the joining of the decorative composite as a sequence of first blind holes or perforations, which penetrate the decorative substrate completely, and unweakened webs between these blind holes or perforations. At least one second blind hole, which does not penetrate the decorative substrate, is introduced into at least one web. The first blind holes or perforations are formed in at least two operations, wherein in a first operation, a preliminary weakening which does not penetrate the decorative substrate completely is introduced into the decorative substrate and, in at least one further operation, at least one subsequent weakening of the decorative composition is introduced through the region of the preliminary weakening. Each subsequent weakening has a smaller cross-sectional area perpendicular to the depth of the decorative composite than the preliminary weakening. A trim element for an automotive vehicle, including a decorative composite produced according to the method is also disclosed.

An apparatus is disclosed for cutting a workpiece. A laser beam is directed at successive points along a workpiece surface to be cut and a sensor emits a sensing beam directed at the same successive points as the cutting beam. A beam combining device receives both the sensor beam and the cutting beam and causes downstream beam segments to be collinear with each other as they impinge the workpiece surface. The cutting is thereby able to be carried out in a single pass, and is precise, repeatable and independent of cutting depth, angle of cutting, scoring patterns, material inconsistency, material color, and surface grain variability.

The invention relates to a planar decorative material (11) comprising perforations (12), for interior fittings, in particular for the automobile industry, which decorative material serves to be illuminated on the rearward face (13) thereof, by an illumination means (18), and allows a portion of the light from the illumination means (18) to pass from the rear face (13) of the decorative material (11), through the perforations (12), to the visible side (14) of the decorative material (11), wherein a film (20) is adhesively bonded to the rear face (13) of the decorative material (11) and the perforations (12) extend from the rear face (13) of the decorative material (11) as far as the visible side (14) thereof, but not through the film (20). An apparatus for manufacturing an automotive interior component and a method for manufacture thereof are provided. The method includes providing a first and second layer of the automotive interior component. The method includes providing an apparatus comprising a first press component and a second press component, the first press component including a pressure chamber configured to receive a protrusion of the first layer. The method includes inserting the first layer into the first press component, such that the protrusion is received by the pressure chamber of the first press component. The method includes coupling the first layer and the second layer, wherein coupling comprises moving at least one of the first press component and second press component toward the other and introducing a first fluid into the pressure chamber of the first press component such that the fluid applies a fluid pressure to the first layer.
