Abstract: The present invention relates to the field of air purification of indoor and/or domestic environments and has as its object a method for air purification and simultaneous photo-conversion of carbon dioxide to oxygen by exploiting a photosynthesis process of an algal culture comprised within an aqueous medium. The method according to the present invention therefore allows to purify the air of an indoor environment by abatement/solubilization of pollutants in the aqueous medium and reduction of CO2 contraction by photo-conversion into O2. The method according to the present invention further comprises the steps of illuminating and aerating said aqueous medium as well as a step of periodically maintaining said algal culture in a state of constant growth in order to optimize the photosynthesis of the algal culture.

Abstract: The present invention discloses an air filter cartridge for use in an air-purifying device for removing formaldehyde (methane, HCHO) and other aldehyde-like VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds), and in certain embodiments amine-like VOCs, from indoor air. The air filter cartridge is made up of a casing containing a plurality of filament-like elements as a support and a mixture of one or more natural polyphenols and a catalyst integrated in said support as a powder, forming a sponge-like mesh. The air filter acts as an absorption filter, the sponge-like mesh reacting irreversibly with the aldehyde-like VOCs present in the air, generating a polymer in the form of a polyphenol-aldehyde resin inside the air filter. Due to this irreversible reaction, the air filter is capable of capturing formaldehyde, as well as other aldehyde-like VOCs that are less reactive than formaldehyde, amine-like VOCs and ammonia.

Abstract: An environment control system utilizes oxygen and humidity control devices that are coupled with an enclosure to independently control the oxygen concentration and the humidity level within the enclosure. An oxygen depletion device may be an oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell that reacts with oxygen within the cell and produces water through electrochemical reactions. A desiccating device may be g, a dehumidification electrolyzer cell, a desiccator, a membrane desiccator or a condenser. A controller may control the amount of voltage and/or current provided to the oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell and therefore the rate of oxygen reduction and may control the amount of voltage and/or current provided to the dehumidification electrolyzer cell and therefore the rate of humidity reduction. The oxygen level may be determined by the measurement of voltage and a limiting current of the oxygen depletion electrolyzer cell. The enclosure may be a food or artifact enclosure.

Abstract: Embodiments relate to systems and methods for fluidization in industrial hygiene applications. The method includes collecting air samples of contaminants onto the surface of fluidized activated carbon particulate as opposed to fixed-bed particulate. The adsorbates include toluene (a cyclic compound) and n-hexane (an open-chain compound). The obtained results are analyzed and discussed in terms of breakthrough times. The input parameters are the initial concentration of toluene or n-hexane in the air feed stream and the amount of the sorbent used. The feed flow rate is at 2 liters/min, and the temperature and humidity are kept constant at their prevailing laboratory conditions, i.e., 22±2° C. and 34±2% RH, respectively.

Abstract: An exhaust system for the treatment of a humid exhaust gas comprising a species to be treated, the system comprising: a dehumidifier system comprising a humid air inlet for providing a flow of humid exhaust gas; a first gas inlet for providing a flow of dehumidified exhaust gas; a second gas inlet for providing a flow of heated gas; a plurality of sorbent beds for releasably storing the species; a treatment unit comprising either: one or more catalysts for decomposing the species; or a condensing unit for recovering the species in liquid or aqueous form; first and second exhaust gas outlets; and a valve system configured to establish independently for each sorbent bed fluid communication in a first or second configuration, wherein: i) in the first configuration the flow of the dehumidified exhaust gas from the first gas inlet contacts a sorbent bed for storing the species and then passes to the first gas outlet; and ii) in the second configuration the flow of heated gas from the second gas inlet contacts a sorbent bed for releasing the species, passes to the treatment unit and then passes to the second exhaust gas outlet; wherein the valve system is configured to ensure that at least one sorbent bed is in the first configuration and, preferably at least one other sorbent bed is in the second configuration; wherein the flow of dehumidified exhaust gas provided by the first gas inlet is received from the dehumidifier system.
