Abstract: Systems, methods, and apparatuses for relieving upper airway obstructive breathing in a patient are disclosed. In some implementations, the apparatus comprises first and second pivot devices anchored to a mastoid bone and a mandible bone, respectively; an implant positioned between the first and second pivot device, the implant comprising a first end coupled to the first pivot device and a second end coupled to the second pivot device; an inactive position, the inactive position enabling a posterior displacement of the second end relative to the first end; an active position, the active position preventing posterior displacement of the second end relative to the first end, and anteriorly positioning the second end relative to the first end; and an activation mechanism enabling transition between the inactive position and the active position, and vice versa.

Abstract: An artificial bladder is provided, including: a main body which includes an inlet port, an outlet port, an inner wall that forms a first reservoir portion configured to store urine between the inlet port and the outlet port and that is expandable and contractible. An outer wall forms a second reservoir portion configured to surround at least a partial region of the inner wall. A sensor is attached to the inner wall, has a surface having a wrinkled structure, and is provided so that, when the volume of the first reservoir portion increases, the wrinkled structure stretches out and resistance of the sensor changes. A control unit is provided to discharge the urine in the first reservoir portion through the outlet port according to a result detected by the sensor.

Abstract: The application is directed to devices and methods where one or more magnetic or magnetizable implants provides therapeutic benefits to a patient. The implant may be useful for expanding the range of motion of joints or dynamically providing different responses to changing conditions in the body where the implant is placed. An electromagnet is placed on or in a bone on one side of a joint, and another electromagnet or magnetically active material is placed on or in a bone on the opposing side of the joint. The electromagnet may be continuously energized to relieve pressure in the joint space, or may be energized in response to forces applied to the joint.

Abstract: A prosthesis for monitoring a characteristic of flow includes a first tubular prosthesis having a lumen and a sensor for detecting the characteristic of flow through the lumen. The sensor may be covered with another tubular prosthesis or by a layer of material in order to insulate the sensor from the fluid flow. A pocket may be formed between the tubular prosthesis and the adjacent layer of material or prosthesis and the sensor may be disposed in the pocket.

Abstract: A stent device including a stent coated with a photosensitizer, the stent including a pair of electrodes; and a circuit fixed to the stent, the circuit including a light emitting diode, a power receiving means for wirelessly receiving power from the outside, and converting the power to electric power; a second communicating means for receiving a control command from the outside; and a second control means for applying, based on the control command, the electric power to the electrodes causing an electric current to flow through the stent between the electrodes, the flow causing heating of the stent, and for controlling a temperature of the stent to provide hyperthermia therapy to a tumor, the second control means further for applying, based on the control command, the electric power to the light emitting diode to emit a predetermined wavelength of light to the photosensitizer to provide photodynamic therapy to the tumor.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a plurality of beads and a linking assembly joining the beads together. The beads include a housing defining a first opening, a second opening, and a chamber extending between the first opening and the second opening. A magnet is contained within the housing. The beads and the linking assembly are arranged in an annular arrangement and sized to form a loop around an anatomical structure in a patient. The loop may move between a contracted and expanded configuration. The loop is magnetically biased toward the contracted configuration by a magnetic bias of the beads. The linking assembly includes a first link element having an elongate body extending in the chamber of the first bead and a sealing element attached to the elongate body housed within the first opening of the first bead to thereby form a hermetic seal.

Abstract: Ophthalmic devices having elastic electrodes are disclosed herein. An example ophthalmic device may be an intraocular lens that includes a support structure, two optical windows, two immiscible fluids, and an elastic electrode. The support structure may have an inner surface defining an aperture with first and second optical windows disposed on opposite sides of the support structure and spanning the aperture. The two immiscible liquids may be disposed in a cavity formed by the aperture and the first and second optical windows, and the elastic electrode may be disposed on the inner surface. The elastic electrode may be formed from an elastic metal alloy having a minimum yield strain of 0.25%.

Abstract: High-resolution, selective, and self-optimizing haptic and electrotactile display and methods of use. In an embodiment of a feedback system referenced herein, the feedback system includes a prosthesis configured to be worn by an individual, including at least one prosthesis sensor configured to detect a state or condition in an environment of the at least one prosthesis sensor, and at least one actuator in communication with the at least one prosthesis sensor and configured to receive data relating to the detected state or condition and to stimulate a nerve of the individual; a neural sensor positioned upon or within the individual, configured to detect a neural response relating to the stimulation of the nerve by the at least one actuator; and a processor in communication with at least one of the at least one prosthesis sensor, at least one of the at least one actuator, and the neural sensor.
